    hi again,

I have followed all the instructions posted in note 30.*, but I
am still having problems. Firstly, when I copy the
    WRITERS_GUIDELINES.DECW$BOOK to sys$common:[decw$book], the bookreader
doesn't see it. If I append WRITERS_GUIDELINES.DECW$BOOKSHELF to
the existing LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF, the bookreader sees the book,
but gives me a 'incorrect version' error when I go to open it.

Also, I am getting this error:

    $ doc /contents test.sdml online bookreader
%DOC-I-IGNOR_DESIGN, Ignoring optional DOC$LOCAL_FORMATS: design data file
%DOC-F-UNR_DESIGN, Unrecognized design - please check your spelling
    $

    Any help would be appreciated,

| | Ooops. Sorry. I inadvertently built that book with an old version
of the tools. I just rebuilt it and it works, so copy the new version
    from VAXUUM::KITS_:[DOCUMENT.V11]WRITER_GUIDELINES.DECW$BOOK. Thanks
    for letting me know.

As for your other problem: it looks like something in the way you've
got DOCUMENT set up or the way you're running it is keeping it from
reading the design.dat file in DOC$LOCAL_FORMATS. This has not been
a problem with other installations: check with whoever installed
DOCUMENT and/or does DOCUMENT system administration to see what's
going on. The .dat file defines the ONLINE doctype so if it's
ignored, DOCUMENT won't recognize the design (as you found out).

    Thanks Mary,

I installed DOCUMENT on this machine, I it appeared to be installed
correctly. I however, cannot locate the DESIGN.DAT file in
DOC$LOCAL_FORMATS, or any DOCUMENT directories, or in any of the
    DOC011, or DOCINT011 savesets?

Is there something I am missing??

| | This may help.
Did you have a DOCUMENT installation previously? If not, sorry. If so, read on.
After I installed V1.1 with the online stuff, etc. It turned out that I had
*TWO* DOC$STARTUP.COM files. One was in SYS$STARTUP, the other in SYS$MANAGER.
One defined DOC$LOCAL_FORMATS to be NL:, the other defined it correctly.
Guess which one executed? (hint: it got me frustrated!)

    Thanks for the try Al,

My logicals are all set up correctly, I just can't find the DESIGN.DAT
    file mentioned in .3 anywhere!

      "DOC$LOCAL_FORMATS" = "DOC$ROOT:[LOCAL.FORMATS]"

| | This may be a stupid question, but you do realize that the file
name is DOC$DESIGNS.DAT, not DESIGN.DAT, correct?

thanks Andrew, you sparked the idea which lead to the solution.

This whole time I, and VAX DOCUMENT, was looking for a file called
    DOC$DESIGNS.DAT. In my DOC$LOCAL_FORMATS directory, I have a file
called CUP$DESIGNS.DAT. When I copied the CUP$ file to be DOC$
    file, the procedure worked fine.

Did I have an old version??

| 54.9 | CUP$ vs. DOC$ | CRAYON::GENT | There is no poetry without madness -- Democritus | Thu Jan 05 1989 13:54 | 12 |
| | CUP$DESIGNS.DAT is the file created by either the internal kit
or the ZK kit (can't remember which). After the installation,
you are supposed to manually merge that file with DOC$DESIGNS.DAT.
(Unless you see the message fly past during the installation, it is
    easy to miss this step!)

The reason DOC$DESIGNS.DAT is not created directly is because
it would supercede existing designs, if you had any.
Glad to hear you got it fixed.

    to open my book???

    What now??

Since the solution to my problem was solved off-line. I figured I would post
the answer here for anyone else ever running into this problem.
My invalid book version was caused by including a file before the <TITLE_PAGE>
tag. (shame on me).
This solved my problem, but another reason for this would have been incompatable
software (bookreader software version (DECW) & Bookreader creatation tools)
Thanks for the help,
