This subject comes up at least every two months, but it never
appears to make any difference. The people you are on about probably
don't read this conference. However Steve Draper has put a note in
recently saying that he will be getting the operators to clear out
the print room of day old chicks (sorry, prints) once a day. We
will just have to wait and see if it works

| | Well... after a number of false starts, I hope that (as of today)
we have re-established a mechanism for dealing with the printer
    room.

The system is much the same as the one that we used to have at Acre
Road, except that instead of the previous days printout being placed
on a rack outside the print room, it will be stacked beside the
    racking in the print room.

So, for those of you who are not familiar with the procedure, this
is what will happen every morning:

    1.	The stack of old (day before yesterday's) printout will be binned.

    2.	Yesterday's printout will be removed from the racking and stacked
        beside it.

    3. Any other printout will be removed from tables, printers etc
       and stacked on the racking.

This will be done by Wai Tsang at approximately 09:00 every morning.
In addition to this, Wai will perform the following:

    1.	Request that Facilities deliver any necessary supplies of paper
        (LP25/LN03/LPS40).

    2. Fit toner and maintenance kits as necessary.

    3. Request ribbon fitting from I.S. Operations when necessary.

Remember, however, that YOU are still responsible for:

    1. Loading paper into the printers as necessary.

    2. Removing/tidying printout during the day.
Many of you do these thing as a matter of course, but there are
still one or two individuals who don't seem to accept that they
share the responsibility for tidying printout or loading paper.

Remember, if you queue a large job, don't just sit there and wait
for VMS to tell you that it has completed - keep an eye on the queue,
and if you see that your job is taking a longer time than expected,
go and see what's wrong. Only the LPS40, if queued with /NOTIFY,
will actually tell you that the printer has run out of paper etc.

The queues themselves remain the responsibility of I.S. Operations,
so if you have a problem with a queue, you should continue to ring
4040. Otherwise, if in doubt, see Wai.

After spending over half an hour wandering through what used to
be Sherwood Forest, trying to find a one page print-out, I noticed that
about 95% of unclaimed print-outs are batch log-files.
It appears that people are not aware that batch defaults to /PRINT.
Would it be possible to add into the system login command file the following
line?
	SUB*MIT :== SUBMIT/NOPRINT.
This would save about 10 trees per day, and people who wanted their
log-files printing, could over-ride the above by typing SUBMIT/PRINT.
