Our MIS group is evaluating FOCUS for use with our RDB databases.
We have made some progress but ran into a few stumbling blocks.
Per IBI's suggestion we called the FOCUS Hotline - no help. We
have attempted to schedule an IBI technical support person to
spend a day with us for the past 4 weeks - no response. We finally
talked with someone there yesterday who told us, very matter of
factly, that 'FOCUS really wasn't designed for use with RDB'.
Just thought I'd share our experience with you and see if you are
experiencing the same lack of support. We've decided to look
into Signal Technology's SMARTSTAR, which sits nicely on top of
RDB.

Anne (and others)
IBI has never been known for great support, even of their own product.
My understanding is that fairly new people are put onto the hotline for
their education...nice for them, VERY frustrating for the rest of us
who really need technical help. I'm an 8 year vet with FOCUS (and just
now getting into RDB...just finished a week long class in Bedford) and
have fixed all of my problems basically on my own.
IBI is right that FOCUS was not designed to use with RDB. FOCUS on the
VAX has been available only about 3 years (its roots are IBM based and
has been on IBM machines for about 10 years). The product is good and
will work somewhat with RDB (read only until everyone has FOCUS 5.2
installed, when we will have read/write capability).

Did you call Burlington or New York? There is a big, big difference
in level of support. Try New York. Invariably, Burlington calls
there anyway. My beef with IBI is that the company still thinks
in terms of IBM and when in doubt, they'll often blame a problem
on the VAX, VMS, or VAX/FOCUS. New York isn't a panacea, but it
makes me feel better about the product....
