I've still got an unused Philips CDV475 CD Video player that can handle
audio CDs. Since it can also be used for 12" CDV disks, I guess it
should also be a splendid CD drive to go with a decent DAC.
1. Did anyone experiment with the CDV475 or other CDV player using
it as a CD drive?
2. Assuming the DAC contributes more to the overall sound quality
than the drive, could anyone suggest a good DAC costing no more
than 500 Pound Sterling? The rest of the set-up is a Copland
CTA401 integrated tube amp and Epos ES14 speakers. With my current
Philips CD650, this combination sounds a bit too forward and
causes fatigue.

The problem that you have may not be to do with the CD player but more to do with the speakers. I auditioned ES14's when I was looking for new speakers a couple of years ago and discounted then after being unable to get anywhere with the sound of my CD player (meridian 206). I also listened to a couple of other DAC's connected to my 206 to see if it made any difference but they didn't (ACRAM Black Box and some other convertor that I can't remember the name of). If I was you I'd buy Linn Keileighs (god knows how they spell it) a QED digit convertor for the 650 and flog the ES14's. This would cost you about �650 but you could expect to get �150-200 for the ES14's if they are in good nick. Stuart | |||||

The ES14's can be superb as long as the source is okay. I auditioned
them with Audio Research valve amps plus a Proceed drive and DAC, and
with Classe solid state amps plus a Marantz drive and DAC -- and both
set-ups gave staggering results. A while ago I compared my own good ol'
CD650 against a Pioneer PDsomething (again using the ES14 but then with
NAIM amps) and the Pioneer sounded much more agreeable. In short,
replacing the ES14s is definitely not an option, and if I would have to
replace them, I would go for Sonus Faber or Avalon instead (nothing
against Linn, simply didn't audition them). Thanks anyway.
