Hi,
How do people go about cleaning their cartridge? I've just replaced my
aging ASAKA with a KLYDE and as the dealer was doing this he let me
peek at the old diamond through the microscope. He was going on about
how did I clean the stylus and I had to admit I only occassionally used
a little piece of green plastic that came with the Linn.
Anyway, he advised that I buy a vibrating cleaner that sits on the
platter (when not revolving!) and cleans the cartridge that way --- all
for only �22. Does anyone out there have experience of these cleaners
(made by Audio Technica I think).

PS. As an aside does anyone understand the dynamics of what happens
when a diamond tracks the grove at 33 rpm? Apparently it gets hot
enough to melt the vinyl.

I have the Goldring version of the cleaner type you mention. It's OK,
but a hassle to use if you want to give the tip a quick clean between
albums. The green plastic does as good a job, but it can wear out.
The Discwasher stiff brush seems a good compromise; it's the same
material as the pad on the electric cleaners.

The Audio Technica cleaner works well, as far as I can tell. AT provide fluid to put on the brush (pad) but you can use it dry. I do because the cantilever of my cartridge is so short that the works might get goo'd up. (This cartridge, a Dynavector 17D2, is quite fragile: it has a diamond cantilever and no suspension to speak of. I started using the AT cleaner because of the harm I might do with Linn green matchpaper and shaky hands.) The biggest worry I have with it is that as it vibrates it tries to wander around the (hard plastic) platter; I don't much like the idea of it trying to drag the stylus backwards, for example, but it hasn't done any harm so far. I guess I could put something sticky on the back of the cleaner to stop this, as long as it didn't leave a residue. Nick | |||||
