The only London Hi-Fi shop I've been to is Graham's at 190a New North
Road. Telephone 071-226-5500. I know they stock Quad equipment. I didn't
buy anything from them, but I had a very good demonstration there.

| 338.2 | Aargh!! Not Tottenham Court Road.... | BAHTAT::SALLITT | a legend in his lunchtime | Tue Jan 28 1992 17:57 | 22 |
| | Ah well. Lots of dealers carry Quad, but many seem to push the more
fashionable lines. Quad just doesn't seem to have a "hip" image, which
in MHO is the last thing anybody wants in legitimate hifi anyway.

"Music At Home" in Moscow Road seem, from their ads, to be the
"old-fashioned" type of dealer that still rates Quad highly. They
always seem to wax lyrical in their ads about Quad amps and ESLs,
LS3/5As with subwoofers, corner reflex cabinet speakers, etc.

Maybe I'm just prejudiced, but I'd avoid Tottenham Court Road like the
plague. There may be dealers there who sell upmarket kit like Quad, but
their style still comes across to me as being from the
    "Tottenham-Court-Road, shift-the-sealed-boxes-as-fast-as-you-can"
school of hifi retail, the Ratners of the hifi market.

"Music At Home", on the other hand, promote themselves as laid-back, a
bit old-fashioned, drawing-room style. Potentially boring on the
surface, but underneath knowledgable and caring for music first, and
looking to provide long term service. This sort of describes Quad too,
which is why I suggest they may be worth a try.

a couple of demo rooms , though they look a little on the small side.

| | Another addon............ref note 135.9 for address etc but I bought
the new Quad 66 preamp with remote for 652 pounds +10 pounds post!

    That's cheap going...........-18%

The preamp images wider, more focus and depth, the mids and highs are
cleaner but the bottom stilll sounds like Quads previous offerings,
full but warm and a little on the soft side (an observation not a
judgement).........the remote is nice to use.

Has any one compared 2 monobloced 405-II's against the 606 power amp?

    Just a silly thought.........

| | I am interested to get a QUAD 606 or 405 bridge mono block and has the
    following questions:-

    1. Does QUAD 606 or 405 work well with KEF speakers ?
       - What other speaker will be a good match ?

    2. Will other preamp match well with QUAD 606 or 405 ?
-Any particluar model ? I have a Superphon 100 preamp.

    3. It QUAD 606 or 405 sound good ? Let said compare to NAIM, LINN and
       EXPOSURE ?
       - How it rate compare to some USA power amps like MUSE 100 etc ?

    Thanks

Not sure about the power amps alone but, the Quad pre/power combo is
usually thought of as laid back and relaxed, some say not too dynamic,
    very well made though.

    Some severe generalisations:

    Naim - detailed, dynamic
    Linn - rythmic
    Exposure - very "ballsy"

| | It that true that must be all QUAD system than it work well. My
    situation could be:-

    1. Using existing Superphon SP100 preamp, QUAD 606 power amp.
CD and tunner only and with KEF speaker.

    2. Alternate plan is to use QUAD 33 or 34 preamp with QUAD 606,
Anyone out there has the above configurartion and give their
       comments.

Certainly a system with Quad speaker will sound very different as the
    speaker technology is very different.

I know people who have Quad amps and "normal speakers, they are very
happy with their systems. For me the Quad sound is not the most
exciting sound, but I don't know if the power amps by themselves have a
    neutral character.

Any Quad fans out their able to give more on Quad?

"So far, information gether are QUAD pre/power with other speakers.
It anyone out there use QUAD 606 with other preamp ? Does it match
    to other preamp ?"
As far as input impedance and sensitivity are concerned, there may be
a few preamps that could cause difficulties, but most should be OK. As
far as sound quality goes, that would depend on so many other factors
other than the preamp that it is almost impossible to answer. Isn't there
anyone in Singapore who can loan you a 606 to try?

" - QUAD 606 use what type of design, bipolar, MOSFET etc ?"
I believe it a MOSFET design. Just about every UK power amp uses them
these days - unless they are tube amps, of course!

" - I have listen to CYRUS II. AUDIOLAB 8000 and EXPOSURE before, there
are all integrated amp, I would like to know how QUAD 606 compare
      to these amps."
Again, that depends on the system to be used. Technically the Quad
should be better in all the obvious areas, like current delivery,
control, load tolerance, and so on.

I haven't been much help but it is hard to answer questions like these.
the only way you can know if a Quad 606 is for you is to listen to one
in your system, or one like it. If you can't do that, I would suggest
you choose from some that you can listen to first, or stay with what you
have and spend the money on CDs.

| 338.13 | Hope to hear from QUAD fans | ZPOVC::PARRYCHUA | Singapore, Life is bid-$-fine | Thu Jul 02 1992 16:22 | 15 |
| | I am looking for a power amp right now since my Superphon SP120 does
not give enough sound stage and also it is rather poor in base for my
KEF C75. So I start to look around power amp which match my budget.

QUAD 606 is in my list (well, it happen to be on offer right now), to
me it prices is good for the power (200w) it gives, the bad thing is
that the dealer can only setup to full QUAD setup for the listening
    test.

I still hope that some mix QUAD owner give their opinions as "the OFFER
on limited period only," So ,if I miss a good buy, it will be a lost
    to me.

    Thanks

| 338.14 | Take it home b4 u mix & match! | UFHIS::JMASLEN | The wheels fallen off your day yet?! | Sun Jul 26 1992 21:11 | 25 |
| | Hi Parry & co..

can't answer the mixed Quad 606 question just yet but I did just get
one for 520 pounds from Lintone in Gateshead yesterday (that damn
recession strikes again!)....stand by for a review as I mix and match
it against the older 303 using the new Quad 66 preamp. Sorry I can't
answe your question about mixing another preamp with it but if your
dealer won't loan you one for the weekend then something is wrong (yes,
even if he is making a discount!!).....if you take it home late
Saturday and return it Monday first thing, it should impact his
business and he hasn't spent any time doing a demo with you so the
discount price should still be ok for both of you. He just needs to
remove the speaker wire plugs and the line in plugs...a total of
    6!..about 30 seconds 'inconvenience'!!.....Parry......if he wants to
sell you a 606, ask to take it home without a shop demo and try your
own preamp and speakers out with it.

A poor man's arcwelder for relatively little money is my sumation of
Quads' power amps in basic terms...for the finer sonic detail, you
shall have to wait a bit!!

    cheers fjeff
