Old ESL = Radiator
New ESL-63 = More upright - sometimes called FRED (Full Range
Electrostic Duplex ?)
The following only applies to the Old ESL the newer ESL-63 is
altogether different.
1. The ESL can have its membrane easily damaged by sparking so are not
really suitable for use as disco speaker though they will go quite
loud.
2. The ESL is a very reactive load - it makes Linn SARA's look tame.
The amp used _must_ be unconditionaly stable.
3. Warning: Some QUAD power amps don't even work with the ESL's. These
include -
* Quad I - A bit rare these days - but my dad has a matched
set.
* 303
405 - Usable if voltage control resistor in place.
405-2 ?
306
606 - I think.
The Quad I and 303 can be modified by Quad for use with the ESL.
4. Note that all ESL's are not equal. Some earlier models require a mod
to be used with any amp other than the Quad II. - This shouldn't be a
problem as I think this changed in about 1960 !
5. Naim do not guarantee their amps into ESL's (Linn do :-). I have
played a Naim 32/160 into ESL's and it sounded very good.
The ESL's are an effecient speaker by todays standards. The Quad II (15
watts per channel RMS !!!) can make them go loud enough !
The old ESL's that live at my parents have had everything from Creek to
Linn and back again played into them and they still sound good.
