262.0. "Help. Marantz rack or separates." by PLAYER::MCGOWAN () Wed Mar 06 1991 10:10
   Hello world.
This is my first written note so any moderator can shift it,
renumber it or whatever as long as someone sees it.
Well here goes...I want to buy a new hi-fi with a level of
quality that matches my money. I have approx. 1200 pounds
in savings to spend on it (equivalent Belgian Francs actually)
and I want to spend wisely.
   I don't need a lot of power-amplifier O/P and my source
preferences are in the order: CD, Cassette, Record - not for
fidelity reasons but for practical reasons. I will consider
any combination of units using some/none of what I already have
depending upon any advice I receive.
   I've got these...
Bang & Olufsen Speakers (Beovox S45's I believe)
Home-made integrated amp. (Electronics is a hobby)
ROTEL RD1000 cassette deck (Approx. 10 years old
and a bit worn out now)
Philips 350 CD player (Unreliable when warm!)
      Philips FP146 linear tracking turntable
                                 (Rather cheap.)
What a combination, eh? Now you know why I'm changing.
Having read quite a few of the notes of this conference
and from my own limited knowledge of hi-fi, I have been
   thinking of...
      Marantz CD50 (CD player-the product
                                  number may not be exact)
SONY top range cass-deck (Single deck, closed-loop,
                                  3-head, etc. not fancy just
                                  good I hope)
KEF Speakers C35 (Product number a bit off?)
2nd Hand Pre-amp (QUAD would be nice!)
2nd Hand Pwr-Amp (QUAD would be nice!)
      Some okay turntable (Optional)
      Some okay tuner (Optional)
      -or-
The MARANTZ 50 series rack system (CD50 is component)
      KEF Speakers C35
Well, what do you think? I like compatible separates (and
I'm not talking about matching colours), yet I doubt that
I can get a lot of good equipment for my money, also
here in Brussels, I don't think that second-hand gear is
   readily available.
So, please consider a good combination of separates (new),
advise me if my Beovoxes are a waste of time or should I buy
a good rack system and hope for a discount. Thank you
   very much in advance.
   Hugh.
