Some friends have asked me to suggest a system for them. Their
requirements are:
The system should cost around 500 pounds, it will be used primarily
for background music or medium level music, certainly not "realistic"
sound levels. Due to the background music bit, tone controls may
also be useful. The ability to switch 2 pairs of speakers is
desirable. The type of music will be varied, from chart albums
to classical.
The speakers must be small and work against a wall. The speaker
choice will be made according to looks and size as well as sound,
but they should sound good at low levels and not need "winding up".
The system will be CD based.
My ideas at the moment are:
CD Philips CD610 or Marantz equiv 160 pounds
Amp Arcam Alpha or Creek 4040 (can the Creek switch 2 pr
speakers?) 160 - 180 pounds
Speakers Celestion DL4 Series, Celestion 3 or JPW Sonata
100 - 120 pounds
The rest of the cash goes on stands and cable.
Anyone out there got any other suggestions?

I'd certainly recommend the Creek 4040 and Celestion DL4's as they're
in my system. The Creek can't switch between two pairs of speakers,
but it is simple enough to remove the jack plugs and insert a different
set.
The speakers look reasonable and sound pretty good. I've currently
got mine mounted on wall brackets quite high up which I feel gives
a better performance than my previous arrangement with them on Target
stands.
My front end is a Rega 3 so I can't really comment on what they
might sound like with a CD, though I can't imagine you'd do a lot
better at the price.
Cheers,
Dave.
