| 97.1 | Rega 3 Main bearing trouble | JUNO::JUNO::HAYES |  | Mon Jun 10 1991 10:04 | 13 |
| | I thought I'd put this here instead of starting a new note,
I've got a Rega 3 which I bought ex-demo a year and a half ago.
And I've just started to notice some play in the main bearing, not much, but
I'm sure it wasn't there when I bought it.
Question1: does anybody know if it should be like this?
Question2: If it is a problem, I think I'll try and get a new bearing from Rega,
           does anyone know how much, and Rega's address?
Thanks,
         Chris.

| | Main bearings sometimes have a *tiny* bit of play before you charge them with
oil. Otherwise they don't have any detectable play. Is this one dry? If so,
should it be?

| 97.3 | You should have no problems. | CRATE::WATSON | Blood on the Rooftops | Mon Jun 10 1991 20:52 | 24 |
|  |     Sorry I didn't reply earlier I must have been asleep.

    The should be absolutly no play on a Rega bearing what so ever (At
    least to the hand). The main bearing of the Rega-3 is the most
    expensive part of the '3 becaue it is machined to such a precision -
    it should have a mirror like apperance.

    Do not dispare thought - as it is ex-demo you should have no trouble
    getting the thing replaced FOC. ALL Rega dealers are of the highest
    quality (There are only 22 (?) dealers in the UK - all hand picked) If
    you have any difficulty then get Rega's number from your dealer (Chris
    Brooks Audio could tell you - 0925-61212) ask to speak to the service
    dept. If this fails then speak to Roy Gandi (?sp) at Rega - he's the
    boss tell him your situation - he is a very nice guy - more than willing
    to help.

    	Hope this helps,

    		Rik.

    Not that you should remove the bearing as it can take hours to replace
    - such is the precision.

| | Any ideas how much oil.
And what sort?
When I bought the turntable, they couldn't find the instructions(what a loss)
but therefore I don't know how often it should be lubricated.
Cheers.
Chris.

As good a place as any...
Anyone know anything about Rega arms and cartridge "hum"?

| 97.7 | Try an earth | FORTY2::SHIPMAN | MOG | Tue Jun 23 1992 17:15 | 15 |
| | Yep, Rega arms sometimes hum. I seem to remember they come without any earth
connection, and you can improve matters by fitting your own.
Try attaching a thin, flexible wire to a suitable piece of exposed metal at the
arm base. Thin and flexible to avoid coupling the armboard to whatever the
wire touches - it'll make a difference even on a Planar. As to where to
connect the other end, you may have to experiment (with the volume down...):
you can try some metal on the deck (eg the earth screw if it uses one), the
earth screw on the preamp, or one of the phono plug screens.
I had to do this once with an RB250/ATxx on my Rock Reference while it was
waiting for its Excalibur/Dynavector 17D2. It worked, but still wasn't
completely quiet.
