I have an inkling of a hankering to build myself a couple of
speakers along the general lines of Spica TC-50's.

This is mainly because they will then fit neatly into a
corner and increase the spousal acceptance factor, but
    I enjoy construction anyway.

    1. Can anyone recommend any good books on Loudspeaker enclosure
    design?

    2. I've heard that placing speakers either up hard against a
wall or in a corner, (I want to do both!) will 'distort' the
sound. I use distort in its widest sense, including imaging,
soundstage etc. Does this distortion happen and why?

| re .0....

The "distortion" you refer to is caused by reflections from surrounding
surfaces, interacting with the direct sound from the box itself.
Some speakers are designed to work against a wall, and use the
reflections to boost bass output, but imaging often suffers. If
imaging is important a speaker used away from surrounding surfaces
is better; but in practice there are always reflections, unless
you listen in a field or an aircraft hangar, and getting a 3-D image
depends on a source and an amplifier capable of capable of producing
the signal anyway. These factors will compromise the speakers'
performance just as much as, if not more than, where you choose
    to site them.

For info on kits, write or call Wilmslow Audio, in Wilmslow, Cheshire
    - their exact address and number escapes me but they advertise
regualarly in most mags. They can supply complete kits, drivers
with cabinet designs and can advise on a "home-brew" design using
the drivers they sell - which include KEF Constructor Series. Their
catalogue tells all, and contains more to tempt you than just
    speakers....

| 72.2 | Progress report | TRUCKS::WINWOOD | These are the Good old days. | Tue Feb 14 1989 13:02 | 15 |
| Thanks Dave, I've now sent the requisite 1.50 to Wilmslow
and await the DIY book with impatience.
I have experimented with the idea of a speaker enclosure
which is isoceles triangle shaped. At the weekend I glued
and screwed a couple of pieces of contiboard (yechh!) together
with a small driver + xover + tweeter. I added internal cross
bracing since the recent Spica's have this as a production
    update.
The whole enclosure worked out at a little over 12 litres
volume and a listening test suggests that the idea is viable.
I now need to do the Real calculations and use decent wood etc.
Will keep you posted re: progress
