| | When I was on holiday in Noirmoutier last year, we gathered on the bridge to
the island to watch the Tour de France go through. A guy in our party stood
in front with the camera to his eye, snapping away. Unfortunately, the
camera viewfinder makes objects appear further away, and he was nearly run
over.
He was pulled back by a gendarme.

| | Does anyone know the precise route? I know they come in via Whitchurch and
Overton, presumably down the B3400 and end up going down the A339 to Alton.
What happens in between?

| | The council offices have a map.
The tour comes in from town centre west junction from the B3400, to victory
roundabout, then to eastrop, then they turn right onto Timberlake road, and
then up the one way system. They then turn left onto London Road, past the
Police station, around London road, and left onto Black Dam estate. They go
around Black Dam estate (A fine place to get lost!), and come out onto the
roundabout by the Crest (can't remember the name). They then head left onto
the A339 to Alton.
Phew!

| | Referring to the original note and not the subsequent replies I
firmly believe that the best vantage point could be obtained within the
Golden Lion, as near as possible to the bar, but for all those cycling
fans out there you may like to choose a public house that is actually
    on-route of the T-de-F.

    Signed,

The tour does not turn into Timberlake Road. It goes straight down
Churchill Way East. (That's why the large roundabout splitting
Churchill Way - I cannot for the life of me remmber its name - was
recently re-surfaced) Then it's the wrong way round the roundabout
and up into New Road. It then turns into London Road and round into
Blackdam estate having passed over the ring road. Eventually it reaches
Hackwood roundabout and turns left for Alton. (As per map issued by
    the Gazette)

For a nice convivial view you could try the Anvil bar terrace or the
    bridge close by.

| | According to the map from the Gazette, they will NOT be hitting the
Hackwood Roundabout - it's Venture Roundabout (by the Crest hotel).

| | Absolutely correct - the one by the Crest. In which case which one is
the Hackwood? Is that the one at the other end of the little dual
carriage way? I've only lived in B'stoke ten years and roundabout names
still confuse me - Blackdam is the only one I am really sure of - I
    think!
