| | Roy,

I had been intending to mention this, but I didn't have time yesterday
owing to it taking me 25 minutes longer to get to work!

There is another topic here that mentions that Beggarwood lane is going
to be closed permanantly, and the notices that have been posted at each
end of the lane only say it that it will be closed, there's no reference
    to a reopening!

The extra strain on the remaining roads is immense, I'm just glad I'm
on leave for the next two weeks.

    Ian.

Which one's Beggarwood lane ? - is it the handy little road that goes
round the back of Sainsburys ?

If it is, it means virtually all traffic approaching Basingstoke from
the south must go via Brighton Hill roundabout - great.....

| | I think the notice at the Woods lane end of Beggarwood lane
mentions a period of 6 weeks. The single track section of
Beggarwood lane may well be permanently closed but the wider
section should shortly be connected via the new road through
the housing developments at Hatch Warren. This road runs from
near to Hatch Warren farm to the road (I forget the name)
    that runs to Kempshott Roundabout.

be closed for a maximum of 3 months, but in reality the work should
take no longer than 4 weeks.

Biggest problem for me is having to go the long way round to get to the
    pub!

| | Beggarwood lane is indeed the short stretch of road near Sainsburys
with passing places. The wider section is called Cliddesden Lane.

The notice at each end does say it will reopen in 6 weeks. I thought
that it is going to be improved. It would be most sad if it was closed
    permanently.

| | I normally use both these roads in order to avoid the frustration
caused by the traffic congestion on the A339 at the Venture
roundabout. ( Also known as the ex CREST hotel roundabout). I waited
45 minutes in that queue this morning. Since nothing happens unless you
complain I did. Basingstoke Highways said "County shut Beggerwod and
did not consult us." I was passed to Winchester. Winchester said oh the
A339 south of Basingstoke comes under John Morgan. 0256 764444. I rang
him. He had no knowledge of a problem and failed to see the
significance of minor closures on a trunk road. He did however promise
to investigate. He had received no other complaints.
Anybody fancy explaining their problem to the Highway dept?

This sums up the Basingstoke Highways Department admirably !
'Short-sighted' and 'Out of touch with reality' are two phrases
which also spring to mind in connection.

| | It seems that the 2 roads that are closed (Beggarwood and Woods Lane)
are closed for different reasons. Woods is closed for the Gas Board and
Beggarwood for the Builders. Do these people need permission or
can they just do what they want.

If they need permission (which of course they must), due to the close
proximity of the two roads, they would be speaking to the same people.
How could permission possibly be granted for the same time period ?

necessarily the same person within that department. The question is, do
the people in the DEPARTMENT talk to each other?

How come "builders" can request a through road closed ? Are they putting

rather than just single stream with traffic lights ?

| | Did you get the full address for complaints? If so please post here.
I use Beggarwood lane on Saturdays because I can't stand waiting 20 mins in
the queue up to the Brighton Hill roundabout when I want to go west from
Brighton Hill. It would not just be a shame if it closed permanently - it
would be disastrous. It would also be typical practice by the authorities.
Everyone who has any interest at all must complain because I'm sure there
just aren't enough complaints crossing the desks of the people who initiate
these closures (as you indicate in your note).

Just to make things easier in this part of Basingstoke, someone
decided to put temporary traffic lights at the Kempshott round-
	about this morning.

You know the ones....they let 3 cars through on the side where
you are waiting in a seething tailback, then stay on for five
minutes on the other side which is completely empty !!

I think that may be a permanent closure since it looks like they

(bypassing the single track bit of Beggarwood Lane

Could this be due to the 'Traffic Calming' mesures they have just
implemented on Brighton Hill Way? Perhaps it is harder to get out of
the other end of that road now ( Sullivan road?? ) so people are going
    the other way.

If thats the case then it looks like they've moved the problem onto
    Sullivan road instead!
