Perhaps we could send that fine J Arthur Dixon reproduction of the
new market square steps, or the bus station at dawn ....

| Did anyone notice the Mail on Sunday magazine article (10th Dec)
on Basingstoke?
I have never actually seen a magazine go so far out of the way to
knock a town (like it or loathe in, you can't ignore it). It has
to be said that a lot of the article was most unfair and ignored
all the good things that we do have.
Things could be worse - we could be Milton Keynes !!!

Compared to dumps like Skelmesdale (sp? "Skem"), Stevenage, Harlow,
or (as previously mentioned) Milton Keynes, Basingstoke comes out as
a very desirable place to live !
Let's face it, if the author of such articles had imagination or
skill they wouldn't be in their current jobs. Gilbert and Sullivan
poked fun at Basingstoke and it got a laugh from the audience so
every budding satirist tries it on when they're short of material
[or ability] but have bills to pay.

| Excuse me, but no way is Basingstoke better than Stevenage. Stevenage has
more leisure facilities, better shopping facilities, it's better for eating
out and it has some great pubs (especially the old town) which serve Greene
King's Abbot Ale!

| "Old town"s don't count - Basing village is quite pleasant - and yes,
I like Stevenage *old* town too. Stevenage has a _different_ selection
of mediocre shops I'll grant you but, as they've built over all the
town centre car parks without providing any replacements, their
value is somewhat reduced. The one building that I miss from Stevenage
is the Gordon Craig [the orange box] ... but if you removed that,
Stevenage wouldn't have much in the way of leisure facilities either.
Given that my memory may be incomplete, the nearest thing to a pub in
the [new] town centre is the Confessor ... and that's stretching the
definition of "pub" a bit :-) . No, I don't think I'll swap the
roundabouts of Basingstoke for the roundabouts of Stevenage.

It may be a desirable place to live, but there's only one
restaurant in the centre that's open past 10:30 pm, and that's
the Tandoori !!

The thing about Basingstoke is that people socialise differently
here. Yes, there are none of the _traditional_ leisure type facilities
(pubs, pubs and more pubs with the occasional pub thrown in for
good measure) but just wander down to the library and take a look
at the literally hundreds of clubs and organisations you could belong
to here covering every conceivable (legal) activity.
I would hazard a guess that in a town mainly populated by young
professionals, the art of the dinner party is practised frequently
here.
Society tends to generate the facilities it needs to live the lifestyle
agreed by the majority - those things aren't handed down on a plate
by an anonymous 'them'.
Having said that, there _is_ an appalling lack of decent restaurants
open in the centre - but who wants to venture near the shopping
centre at night?
I will now stand dowwn from the orange box.
p.s. I still think that MK is the worst place in the whole universe
