| | Selection of software vendors for OEM, CMP and SCMP relationships
has never been a "one man band". While Dick's departure does present
some staffing challenges, the process of identification and
implementation of new insurance software for the VAX platform
continues. Dick, as part of Insurance Industry Marketing was one
of the people who helped to identify potential software and worked
with Channels and FISG to "prove out" the appropriatness of the
    vendor.

The process goes something like this:

Insurance Industry Marketing works with the Finance Industry Systems
Group to define "critical applications" we would like to see on
the VAX, and the characteristics that the systemms should have.
Once a potential candidate has been identified, channels works to
get them interested and move them to an OEM relationship. During
this process it is sometimes appropriate to make an investment to
aid them in conversion. FISG then picks up the ball and works with
them to establish an SCMP or CMP relationship, if that is appropriate.

It is important to recognize that there are various "gating" factors
in the process of forming any one of these relationships, and that
the process can take considerable time in some cases. Further, there
are always a limited number of vendors in each of the "slots" for
    software.

If you have a vendor that you believe would add significantly to
Digitals software portfolio I suggest that you share the name with
Barry Kaditz or myself, and we will pass it along to the right person
    -- if appropriate.

| | Check SOFTbase (on corporate videotex or ACCESS depending on your
location. It has some imperfections and may not be complete (that's
being worked on jointly by the folk in FIMG, FISG and the IFT),
but it's the best we have as a general reference at the moment.
We are beginning the necessary work to package a Financial Industries
STAR seminar. When it's ready, your Area Finance Industry Marketing
Manager'll (AM/FM) be the first to know.
