THE PDP10 USED SHP DATA FROM CORP. REV. ACCOUNTING TO DERIEVE USA
CERTS. THE FAPS USES OTD TO DERIEVE USA CERTS. AS WE ALL KNOW USA
OTD CAN BE AS MUCH AS A MONTH LATE DUE TO LATE UPDATES, AS PER THE
USERS GUIDE SECTION III.4-2. IF WE ARE GOING TO DO USA CERTS FOR
SEP. 1988 WE SHOULD NOT RUN UNTIL AT LEAST WEEK 3 OCT. 1988 BECAUSE
USA OTD WILL NOT BE COMPLETE UNTIL SUCH TIME OR LATER. AS IT STANDS
NOW WE ARE USING USA OTD WEEK 1 IN OUR CERTS CALCULATION, WHICH
IS NOT A COMPLETE SNAPSHOT OF THE PREVIOUS MONTH IE. SEP. 1988.
I FEEL THAT USA CERTS SHOULD CONTINUE USEING SHP DATA FROM CORP.
REV. ACCOUNTING ON THE VAX, UNTIL SUCH TIME THAT THE PROPER FEED
IS SOURCED FROM THE WJO DATA WAREHOUSE SYS. WHICH I UNDERSTAND OUR
DATA WAREHOUSE GROUP IS AND HAS BEEN WORKING ON AS A PROJECT.

Ken,
As you said, some OTD data DOES flow to us after the 1st week of
the month. However, this percentage is much smaller than is the
case with shipments since as you stated, shipments flow through
the accounting systems first before reaching us. One reason we
decided to use OTD instead of shipments is, in fact, because of
the timeliness of OTD data as compared to SHP.
We also spoke to various users who voiced a preference for OTD rather
than SHP in the USA/GIA total certs derivation. I agree that the
accuracy will improve even more upon the completion of the system
T project, but all indications even now point to OTD providing an
accurate and timely CRTS indicator. Please feel free to call me
if you wish to talk more about the pros and cons of using OTD.
