ELECTRONIC DOCUMENTATIN MASTERING STANDARD Seminar - 12/20/90

Notes taken by Lorraine Sharon

EDMS Master File for file to film printing contains:

	- Master postscript file of your book
	- Finishing and assembly sheet information as well as comments
	   and instructions
	- an indexing feature - the indexing feature marks each page
so you can pull out pages or subsets of pages either for
	   review or print

General procedure to form the MAIN body of your DOCUMENT:

	1. Create .SDML file
	2. Compile .SDML file = .PS file
	3. Do an RV (a process to adjust the margins correctly and evenly
	    	for binding purposes).
	4. Do printspecs, mechanicals, and assembly sheets (Using the
	    	DOCSPEC utility)
	5. Run a .PS file through EDM application = .PS file that is
EDMS compliant (CRC with color markup)
	6. Submit to printer for production
		-File to film in U.S.
		-File to plate in Galway

General printing areas not supported yet:

	- No foldouts
	- No bleeds
	- No screen tints
	- No books over 1,000 pages
	- No tab divider locator pages
	- No color covers

Some of these areas to be supported in the May release.

12/90 - Only several internal doctypes are presently EDMS compliant.
In other words, these doctypes have specific EDMS tags to use
	for color and so on.

	- CUP family doctypes (recently announced)
	- EDMS doctypes
	- DECwindows_enduser
	- ...others now being worked on

EDMS (scheduled for release in Feb. 1991) supports the following software:

	- VAX DOCUMENT V1.2B
	- DECwrite (B & W)
	- Dtroff
	- Interleaf (B & W)

**** Comment made by Jae Kim, EDMS Engineer: "Non-VAX DOCUMENT (Non-tagged
software) conform to EDMS easier than VAX DOCUMENT software."

Questions and answers from the seminar:

1) When can we expect to see the elimination of salts?

ans. SSB will recommend and get buy off on a proposal to
the documentation groups with the company that identifies
an approach to certification from a supplier standpoint
and documentation group standpoint. SALTS will not dis-
appear overnight. It will be a slow, evolving process.

2) When is the 'bleed' printing option going to be incorporated into
    the DOCSPEC for mechanicals?

	ans. EDMS V2.1 - May 1991 timeframe

3) It okay to do 'mixed' submissions?

ans. Definition of 'mixed' submissions: several books in a
doc set go to printer hardcopy and several go electronically.
Yes, this will be allowed. However, not without early
pre-planning and coordination with the SSB.

4) What about SSB providing the documentation groups with scheduling
    information?

ans. Timeline is coming from SSB. Presently, groups do not
know how to plan for electronic submissions. Typically,
salt review happens 5 to 10 days after submission. With
EDS it's cut to under 5 days. Reason for savings in time:
			- Manufacturing saves time processing books
both at prepress and prep time at SSB

SSB is preparing new information on timelines and rules
tables for documentation groups to use. Work is being
done now with Annette Frongillo and her replacement.
