4730.0. "PCs: Over the hump yet?" by TROOA::RJUNEAU () Wed Jul 17 1996 12:18
    Are we over the hump for PCs yet? Last paragraph is most interesting...

    From an article in the Toronto Globe And Mail, Wednesday July 17 1996:

    ...

    Digital makes personal computers for all of the Americas in its Kanata,
    Ontario plant, but in recent months it has been hurt by intense
    competition in the PC industry.

    "There's no question shipments in our fourth quarter [ended June 30]
    would
    have been down from the previous quarter essentially based on us having
    more product in the [distribution] channel," said James Nolan, general
    manager of Digital's personal computer field unit.

    Digital's Canadian manufacturing also wasn't helped by a decision by
    its
    parent company, Digital Equipment Corp. of Maynard, Mass., to exit the
    consumer PC business. But Mr. Nolan said the effect of that decision
    was mitigated by the fact that Digital Canada had yet to fully ramp
    up its production of PCs for the consumer market.

    "I believe we've been through the pain in the last quarter," he said.
    "We're seeing very strong demand halfway through July."
