I find the webELF with reporting structure extremely helpful.
Often in the field in order to get a customer question answered
I have to call someone (often someone listed in the header of a Sales
Update article, or a product manager mentioned in a notesfile).

By knowing the reporting structure, in and your peers as well, I can
now see who else to call if you are one of those people who
unfortunately treat the phone as an inconvenience.

One of IBM's greatest ideas was that there are only two job functions
in the company: Sales and Sales Support. If you aren't in sales, then
you are in Sales Support. Sales has to be responsive to the customer,
since they are the ones with the money. Everyone else, including
myself, need to think in support of the sales effort in this company.

WebELF gives me a yet another way to do just that!

What an attitude.

| 4439.5 | Attitude | FSAEUR::ROE |  | Thu Feb 22 1996 09:30 | 25 |
| | To elaborate on what I said in .2 and my "attitude"

I really don't know what it took to put this together or to maintain it
and I do know that it could be helpful to some but....

I also know that 65,000 people have been layed off by Digital including
many this last week. In a company that it is difficult to get paper
clips, I was just surprised to find that such a tool existed. What is
the estimated number of DECies that (a) know about this tool (b)
actually have access to it and (c) have access to it on a timely basis?
    I don't know.

I guess that I was just expressing frustration at seeing one tool after
the other go away, including many fine talented human tools.

Every tool is a plus. Every tool is a help. It's just that different
people have different priorities. Every day someone decides on
Secretary or voice mail, Sales Rep or HiNote with mobilizer, new VP or
new office PCs. Some of us lean one way and some of us lean the
other. Someone decided to stop publishing Digital Phone Books (a tool
that I used all the time) and Systems and Option Guides. If that saved
jobs, great. I, fortunately, do not have to make these decisions but I
    can have opinion, thank you.

My "what a waste" refers to what has gone not to what remains.

With the long response times I experience nowadays on our internal

    receive it... ;-)

We actually do. Much of our public literature and quotes
with text from the price file have poor spelling. I can't
tell you how tired I am of seeing "DECnet End note" licensing
        on quotes!

I know you were emphasizing the second-by-second timing, but
the spelling brought this issue to mind.

| | The ancient ncsa web server on TRUTH:: is flakey, the http daemon keeps
getting wedged in MUTEX state. Short term fix is to move it to
Purveyer, which was recently installed. The application is in the process
of being re-written/improved to be rehosted on NT.

shortest that it's been in the 15+ years I've been with DEC/Digital.
