| | you raise a very valid point that ties back to the VTX discussion on keeping
information up to date, something we as a corporation have not done a very good
job at. obviously, the people who are populating the www look at it as a part
time job which you do once and you're done, or as a best case scenario something
you only do every month or two.
the problem with this www game is once you commit to playing you have to keep
current or you look even worse than if you don't play at all.

| | I complained last summer that the www.pc.digital.com pages were content-free -
in particular, no model numbers were given and it was impossible to determine
what was included in various packages. The response I got suggested that
customers were then supposed to contact resellers to get this info. I
don't agree with this.
What's worse is that now some of the "technical specs" pages conflict - there
are two different pages with Starion specs that list different model
lines.
Our PC web pages were designed by an outside firm. There seems to have been
little emphasis placed on content. The only good part is the accessibility
of the BBS files.

| 4369.5 | Why should the web pages be any different from our advertisements ? | STAR::FENSTER | Yaacov Fenster, Process Improvement, Quality & Testing tools @ZK | Tue Jan 16 1996 15:45 | 7 |
| | Why should the web pages look any different from our magazine ads ?
Take the ads in PC Magazine for example. Most ads contain enough
information so that you get a good idea of prices and configurations.
Digital's ad however has a "call 1-880-DIGITAL for your nearest
reseller" line. SO instead of starting out with some information, you
have at LEAST 2 phone calls (and waiting on line) in order to get the
    same information.

Why shouldn't they be more like a catalog?
It can be looked at many ways. I, for one, would like to see
	the SOC on the web.

I see it makes sense... Two phone calls to us at our cost of $2 /call?
(800 charge + overhead to answer the question..)

I still think it is somehow related to poor information managment...
The folks at the 800# don't seem to have good information to answer
question.. Like what options work with which HW /SW????

| | Yup, when you miss the entire market by not having a HiNote Pentium
Multimedia Ultra to offer the world you then get a business unit in
overhaul mode, new management, new IBM guys running the show and trying
to salvage our brand idenity and engineers, suppliers, et al working
their asses off to try and get back in the game without losing massive
marketshare. It doesn't leave a lot of time to go off and keep the web
pages current with info. that *motivates* people to buy your goods.

Face it folks, we missed the next ride on the Pentiums by a year or so
and now we are in major catch up mode. All the distributors bought our
excess inventory at low margins since we were not going to be able to
use the design platform for the old Ultra's to support the new
Pentium's. And the remainder are on the fire sale dock for EPP.

And my customer just bought 100 Pentium Notebooks from Gateway.

    Gee isn't this fun

And what makes the pot even more bubbly is the comment I got
today stating unequivicably that "you old DECcies keep getting
in the way" - *excuse me*!!!

I happen to be one of the people that got this company to
$13-billion in revenue. We better start realizing *we* are all
in the same boat here, folks, 'cause the marketplace could give
a ratsa** about who in Digital did what and to whom...

Maybe the Q2 numbers will be *another* wake-up call...

    Ok,

Someone elighten me, the *entire* Hi-Note line is to be discontinued
due to lack of Pentium inserts, 'cause of design? Or just the Hi-Note
itself, not the Ultra? A total revamp of the design is necessary?

    Say it ain't so................

is in the works. Supposedly, there will be an "Ultra-like" series in the new
line - thin and light.

| 4369.14 | To return to web page problems.. | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Richard Hart | Wed Jan 17 1996 10:29 | 17 |
| | I'd like to return to the web page issues again. I have recently begun to
work on printer support. I have looked at the web pages that our competitors
use for printers (I haven't looked at web pages for pc's and notebooks, but
I suspect the problems are similar there too).
Some of our competitors (HP and Canon come to mind) have their web pages set
up much like a catalog. On the initial page you select printer features
that you are interested in (color, postscript, speed, etc..). Then a list
of printers that meets your needs is generated. If we want to sell anything
with reasonable cost and customer satisfaction, we need some similar web pages
soon! For all our products.
A web page containing a completed order form could even be generated that
can be printed and sent in with a check, and direct payment and immediated
shipping of the product is certainly possible, too. But, wait.. we don't
sell to everyone who wants our products anymore.. Silly me..
