| 4357.2 | Service Information Generally Available... | XDELTA::HOFFMAN | Steve; VMS Engineering | Thu Jan 11 1996 09:38 | 18 |

There are any number of technical manuals available for most Digital
hardware products -- there are (still) a few widgets that are considered
to be rather proprietary, but most systems and most controllers have
service manuls and print-sets available. For a cost, of course.
One of the more appropriate things for these folks to consider is the
Digital Assisted Services (DECmailer) offering. Unless the end-customer
folks are willing and able to work with surface-mount technologies, they
will likely want to get the information necessary to isolate to the `FCU'
level and swap -- then they can use DECmailer to get the widget repaired
   or replaced.
The process is to acquire the user's or owner's guide for the system
and look up the service information part numbers in the section covering
`related' documentation. One can probably acquire these documentation
part numbers through other means, as well.

| 4357.3 | Digital Assisted Services Can Help | MKOTS3::MACDONALD |  | Thu Jan 11 1996 17:38 | 14 |
| | Digital Assisted Services not only still offers any available
hardcopy documentation, but they also sell a subscription service for
maintenance documentation and related information on CD-ROM or microfiche
(yep, it is still used). It is called MDS (Maintenance Documentation
    Service).

Printsets are pretty much a thing of the past - illustrated parts
breakdowns are usually (not always) included in maintenance manuals/
    users guides today.

There are a number of places you can get info on what Digital Assisted
Services has to offer, but the quickest route for the information you
are after is to contact George Gardner, Corp. Business Manager for MDS.

| | Thanks to all who responded here and to those who have cotacted me
personally. I think we're onto something with Digital Assisted Services.
The prime said it sounds like the available documentation may well meet his
needs so I'd say we're in the running.
THanks again for the input.
enjoy,
tim moffitt

I've another one for you. It's intent to become a One stop hardware
shopping for MV service centers and service desks... But, keep in
mind it is heavily under construction. And it will change over the
next weeks. There are also drawings, repair specifications, in the
repair library, but they are password protected. For access contact the
service desk ENGQA @JGO (DTN 889-9666).
      The pointer is:

      Pls sign the guestbook.
      Wilbert.
