Alpha 2100s Being Retired???
Does anyone know if the Sable is being replaced by another processor?
Is it being retired? My customer caught this through the "grapevine"
after purchasing ~ 30 2100s to replace an existing VAXcluster at
several sites... they are *concerned*.
Cross posted in SABLE. Please point me to technical literature that
will make my client happy...smile. I have told them if we make it and
sell it, we'll support it... they'd like a "corporate statement".

We have two Sables on internal order. DEC can't crank them out fast
enough to meet the demand. Who told your customer that, like a Sun
salesperson? :-)

Did we "retire" the 2100 4/190 (sorry, 4/200) yet ?
I suppose we did, sort of - you get a compatible better faster one for
the same price. Can your customer live with that ? (Some can't, they
want the same hardware throughout the lifecycle of an ongoing project -
there are things that can be done to help them too).

Is SABLE dead or moribund? far from either. Is there new stuff around
the corner that is a new improved SABLE, yup. Is it a good fit with
with existing SABLES, yup. Time to get the customer a Servers PID, make
them feel that Digital has nothing to hide.

PID :== Proprietary Information Disclosure
A PID is a futures presentation delivered to customers, which
details exactly what Digital intends to do within a certain
sphere of business. One sphere of business is servers, one
of our hardware strengths.
Because PIDs discuss unreleased products, the customer signs an
agreement, promising not to disclose this proprietary information
with others (such as our competitors).
PIDs can be located in VTX IR -- you need to become authorized to
receive PIDS -- I'm not sure of the authorization pocess.

PID :== another of Digital's Stealth Marketing approaches
I've never understood how it is that Intel is happy to talk about
products that aren't even designed yet, just to "freeze" the market,
and how Digital is deathly afraid of telling anyone about our products,
even when they're already in the manufacturing pipeline.
My last experience with PID's lead me to believe that their sole
intention is to remove any vestige of sales rep productivity by
tangling them in internal red tape, and restricting the flow of
useful information to the customer. Internal people who I'd never
heard of before had to "sign-off" on releasing the information bit
by bit, I had to spend lots of time justifying the "release" of
"proprietary" information, and I only found out that the information
even existed in a completely accidental fashion.
As long as we maintain these kinds of internal-oriented processes, we
will continue to lose ground in the product wars, and continue to waste
money on non-essential business activities while cutting much-needed
resources to the bone.

May I suggest that you get the sales rep involved in the cycle? If you are the sales rep, please contact your sales support -- they CAN help you out. From your notes node (DPDMAI), you may be in my area (Dallas), and I'd be happy to help you out and/or steer you in the right direction. Most of us in sales support are well versed in Digital's products, directions, and are quite familiar with our larger customers. We may already have a number of relationships in that account. If the account is handled by a distributor/channel, there are also mechanisms to provide the customer with future direction information and guidance. | 4190.8 | 2100 being refreshed | DANGER::PORRAS | Bob Porras 223-3763 | Tue Oct 17 1995 09:53 | 17 |
The statement is false period. The 2100 family (Sable was the 1st
wave of product) will be refreshed shortly with the Lynx wave.
Eventually Lynx will be refreshed with a follow on... and so on and so
on... There is a marketing message to tell the customer and that gets
defeated when FUD gets put into the system (Sable being retired).
Bad news travels fast, I hope this note clarifys the question. We will
continue to evolve the server family. It is a customers choice to stay
or migrate. In either case, their platforms will be supported. We
make a mistake when we reference project names cancelling each other.
They are all part of a family of products.
When HP introduces a new line like the HP 9000 Series J Class, K Class
and T Class you see a family. Who knows how many internal projects
make this happen. HP has the marketing and momentum. We have the
technology, but need those 2 big "M" words.

Thank you all for the information... I have been contacted offline by
the Sable Product Manager. This is EXACTLY the type *timely*
information sharing that keeps us in business...
Additionally, as .7 noted, I HAVE contacted my local Sales Rep and we
are arranging for a technical briefing of futures for the 2100
"family". Nice note, .8...smile.
When you're in the trenches, it's important to have quick, concise,
accurate information regarding our direction(s). I'm not always on top
of our product lines developments...smile.

I am astonished about the status of Sable and need to know what's
going on too. I submited a two proposals (I am with SI) and waiting

We really have to stop rumors and concern about this sort of stuff.
There are plans for Alpha going out to the year 2000 and those are
available under PID.
Schedule of near term announcements is available on the internal web page
(except the link is down right now %$#&%$#)
Of course the current 2100 will be obsolete and get to end of life soon,
but that's how it's always been except the change
rate is quicker now. Even if the 2100 was discontinued, to be replaced
by the Alphawizard 734/8/560, it would still be part of a compatible
family. We should make all customers and prospects very comfortable with
that.

Possibly you're just hearing feedback re announced product retirements (e.g., in Customer Update). In the July issue, it was announced that the following had been retired (are no longer available for purchase): AlphaServer 2000 4/200 pedestal systems; AlphaServer 2100 4/200 pedestal, rackmount, and cabinet systems; AlphaServer 2100 4/275 systems with RZ28-VA narrow SCSI disks. Migration path(s) include AlphaServer 2000 4/233 pedestal systems; AlphaServer 2100 4/233, AlphaServer 2100 4/275 with RZ28-VW Wide SCSI disk. This is standard operating procedure, as mentioned in several previous replies: why continue building and selling a system when a "better" (however you want to define that) system can be built and sold at about the same price? | |||||

Mic:
PIDs can be obtained from your regional PID captain. If you don't
know who your PID captain is, ask your S3 manager or ABU/SBU driver.
Sometimes they are tied up so you have to get your cross-functional
telesales rep working on it, too. (I'm not sure who mine is but
I'm sure my territory manager for this Zipcode does).
If all else fails, send mail requesting the PID to:
Black_Hole @MRO (ALL-IN-1), or,
COLIN::COLON (VAXmail)
So you see, it's really simple, once the process is explained. At
least the above has been my experience.
Dan :-)

If you had attended this quarterly training (actually 3 times per year)
you would have learned all about the 2100 follow-on. Training is for
Digital Business Partner and Digital. We just finished in the US. If
you want to catch the next session we will meet you in either Asia or
Europe. I'll will be posting the information on the IR next week when
the errors have been corrected.
My DUPS Information Server is down right now but hope to have it corrected
next week. If you send mail to it you'll always get this information
package about when the next training. This information is supplied
from Digital World-wide Training Organization.

The following is information on the Fall FY96 DUPS. Included is
information on:
Agenda, Cities, and dates.
Please be sure that our partners, this includes Distributors, Master
Resellers, ISVs, tiered VARS, get the information as early as possible. This
will provide the information necessary to coordinate logistics at the site of
their choice. As with last quarter, DUPS will be open to Digital Sales &
Support representatives as well as to ALL of our partners.
Last quarter, over 1500 partners and Digital personnel attended DUPS. With
the ever increasing attendance, it is extremely important that registration
be completed by the Friday prior to the session that they will be attending.
Presentation handouts, meals, etc. are based on the numbers which we have on
that day. It is embarrassing not to have sufficient materials for attendees.
Please do your part to ensure that our count is as accurate as possible.
If you have any questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to call a member
of the team.
I look forward to seeing you at DUPS and I appreciate your continued support.

Gee, I would have thought that *IF THERE WAS ANY CONFUSION AT

it, then this note was serving a useful purpose.
Just keep putting the facts in. And if you believe "It's not

communicate with the folks who sell and buy our products.
Nowadays, this communication is conducted through a wide var-
