I used to have frequent problems with CompUSA, until about the last
    month or so.

I wish there were an ombudsman of some sort that we could go to when
the corporate discount program doesn't go as smoothly as planned. Its a
waste of time to go across town, only to be denied a discount, when you
could just as easily have gone across the street.

As it stands now, it seems as though our corporate discount can be granted
or denied at the whim of the store personnel.

Maybe it would make a useful note, if we could get people to post the
name and location (or store #) of the stores which refuse to honor our
corporate discounts, as well as the dates and names of store personnel
spoken to. If nothing else, it would at least make useful info for
people to know which stores are no worth going to.

The store location wouldn't help. We only have one CompUSA here in
Jacksonville, FL. I am batting .500 there. I have been able to get
the discount twice and have been turned down twice...

| 4178.5 | it's all relative | BBRDGE::LOVELL |  l'eau; c'est l'heure | Wed Oct 11 1995 15:52 | 22 |
| | As a visitor to the USA from France, I was amazed and *DELIGHTED* at
the relative efficiency of the huge retail chains in recognising
    applicability of coporate discount agreements.

I was treated extremely courteously in CompUSA - shown the Coporate
Collection Counter, asked for my badge and had the agreement explained
to me. Saleswoman told me that the agreements on h/w are pretty
straightforward but that s/w is mucho complicated due to various
parties' entangled margin calculations. So she advised me to tour
the store and bring any item of interest to the counter for a
    manual "discount estimate".

This worked well. I was a little embarrassed to keep asking then for
their "best price for Digital" but they kept smiling and delivering.

Best deal was about 18% discount on list for Starion. Worst deal was
+12% (yes that is a negative discount i.e. the corporate discounted
price is more than the retail price) for Windows95 upgrade.

Maybe you guys who complain should try shopping in France :-)

    /Chris.

| 4178.6 | Ask to speak to the store manager | ACISS1::SETLOCK |  | Thu Oct 19 1995 11:13 | 9 |
| | My experience at COMPUSA has been that many of the check out people
don't know about various discounts or how to do them. If one gets a
check out person who doesn't know and just wants to get rid of you, the
response is there is no discount. I've pushed back when receiving this
response and requested a manager. The manager always gets me the
discount. So, IMHO don't take no for an answer until you get it from a
    higher authority.

| | You don't go to the checkout people at CompUSA for the discount - you must go
to the Corporate Sales desk - they will look up the discount price and write
it on the price sticker. I've never had a problem doing this.

| | It is also my understanding that if you call STREAM INTERNATIONAL
(Digital's distributor for PC SOFTWARE), you can order the software
for what DIGITALS cost centers get charged. So any discounts that
DIGITAL gets you get. You can call 1-800-934-0970. Tell them you are
a DIGITAL employee and you want to purchase for personal use. Like any
where else, some deals are good, some are not. Worth a shot...
