| | The 'official' numbers for hw announcements are published on each
announcement day in the Performance Briefs and Performance Flashes,
posted on the WWW, in VTX IR, and in:

    		PERFOM::CSG_REPORTS:

(which is where things moved from MSBCS::CSG_REPORTS:).

Many of the filespecs have obvious abbreviations to indicate operating
system, SerVeR, WorkStation, etc, and the date, in the form YYMMDD.

Thus OSF_SVR_PERF_BRIEF_941103.PS describes the performance of servers
announced in November 1994 under OSF with quite a bit of detail, and
OSF_SVR_PERF_FLASH_941103.PS describes them more briefly. A text
version of the latter is available as OSF_SVR_PERF_FLASH_941103.TXT.

To be added to the mailing list for announcements of future additions
to the directory, send a request to PERFOM::CSGPERF

25-Oct-94. Attached is an updated version, reflecting the move of the
group from BXB to ZKO and the move of the directory from MSBCS:: to
    PERFOM::

Thanks to Lee for providing this.

Do you know which computer vendor holds--
	the highest AIM rating?
the top tpsA and the best tpsA price/performance measurements?
	the highest NFS operations/second?
	the best graphics performance?
The answers to these and many other performance-related questions are easier
to get than you may think.
The CSG Performance Group provides customer-ready documents that highlight
the performance of Digital's platforms (Alpha, VAX, and MIPS) running such
industry-standard benchmarks as TPC, AIM, SPEC92, SPEC SFS (LADDIS),
Xmark93, GPC/PLB, SYSmark93, LINPACK, NETmark, Dhrystone, DN&R Labs CPU2, CERN,
and others under DEC OSF/1 AXP, Windows NT, and OpenVMS.
Of all our performance documents, perhaps the most recognizable are the
Alpha AXP Workstation and Server Performance Briefs. Published in support
of new Alpha AXP products' introductions, these documents contain "brief"
descriptions of the new platforms and the benchmarks as well as
graphs depicting Alpha AXP performance in comparison to the performance of
competitive systems. Test configurations and the performance of retired
Alpha AXP platforms are appended. Companion documents, i.e., Alpha AXP
Workstation and Server Performance Flashes, show only the performance of
current Alpha AXP platforms.
Additional information is available on a variety of performance-related
topics including tuning (OpenVMS, DEC OSF/1, and Windows NT Performance
Primers), TPC (detailed discussion of TPC-A, TPC-B, TPC-C, and
TPC-D workloads and test specifications in the TPC Primer), graphics (long and
short versions of the Graphics Performance Summary), and even a report comparing
the relative performance of Alpha AXP and VAX systems. SPEC submission pages,
AIM reports (both Digital and non-Digital), TPC Full-Disclosure Reports, and
DECUS and symposium papers are also maintained on-line.
Why? Because all customers are concerned about performance. It is one of the
hottest topics in any sales discussion and most certainly one of the top
decision points. Industry-standard benchmarks provide customers with an
apples-to-apples comparison between vendors and are often required in
RFPs. Most of these benchmarks are regulated through an industry consortium
of vendors, a third-party corporation, or a commitment by vendors to
standard testing methodologies.
The CSG Performance Group is actively involved in the industry's performance
community, and members of our group represent Digital at consortium meetings,
on steering committees, and at benchathons as well as play major roles in the
development of new benchmarks. We are committed to ensuring that Digital's
Alpha AXP performance leadership position continues.
In support of the October introduction of new servers and workstations, the
following documents will be available on announcement day or (shortly
thereafter):
