PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Internet AlphaServer family consists of three factory-configured,
packaged Internet-ready servers that put a world of information on your
desktop. An optional license allows you to use Netsite server software from
Netscape Communications, which is fully supported by Digital worldwide.
Digital's unique ELECTRONIC LOCKER administration software provides easy
management of server and user accounts with a Mosaic like interface. In
addition, pre-installed public domain software includes SMTP-compliant
e-mail, Telnet, FTP, WAIS, INN network news server, TIN, and NCSA and CERN
World Wide Web server software.
In addition, all servers come factory-installed with MailWorks for DEC OSF/1
software (SPD 45.16), which includes the InfoBroker Server software.
The Internet AlphaServer family consists of the Internet AlphaServer 1000
4/200, Internet AlphaServer 400 4/233, and Internet AlphaServer 200 4/166
packages.
The Internet AlphaServer 1000 system is a top-of-the-line, highly expandable
system with enhanced server features such as ECC memory, ECC cache, internal
RAID, hot-swappable SCSI-2 disks, fully redundant power supplies, and dual
SCSI backplane. High-availability features include fan and power supply
sensors, and an LCD operator control panel. The server comes with a 4 Gbyte
DAT drive for backup. Internal disk storage can be increased up to 14 Gbytes
using 2 Gbyte disks. This system is ideal for small and medium sized
businesses and users who have high-availability production requirements,
such as Internet service providers.
The Internet AlphaServer 400 is the highest performance CPU system. It is
ideally suited for Internet publishers and application developers, including
developers who are building next generation multimedia applications and
video conferencing tools for the Internet.
The Internet AlphaServer 200 is the highest value server, offering high
performance at a great price. This system is suitable for small to medium
sized workgroups such as schools, libraries, and small businesses.
All Internet AlphaServer systems have industry standard PCI, ISA, or EISA
system buses; an integrated CD-ROM drive; a 14.4 Kbit ISA fax modem; a 1
Gbyte disk; memory; and a floppy drive.
BENEFITS
All Internet AlphaServer systems come complete with the most commonly used
Internet applications -- such as mail, news readers, and file transfer
programs -- so that users do not have to be technology experts to connect to
and get full use out of the Internet.
The optional Netsite server software offered by Digital has four advantages
over other HTTP compatible servers:

With factory-installed software, there is no need for the consolidating,
compiling, testing, and tuning usually associated with building and
debugging a system from scratch. This saves time and money in system setup
and installation.
The ELECTRONIC LOCKER administration software is based on Hypertext Markup
Language (HTML), making it faster and easier to add, modify, and update user
accounts. Using a familiar Mosaic front-end, non-experts can automate the
creation of user accounts, and perform routine server maintenance such as
tracking disk quotas.
MailWorks for DEC OSF/1 server software allows users to connect to a variety
of clients and mail transport services. The selection of desktops supported
includes Windows, DOS, Macintosh, Motif, and TTY. In addition, cc:Mail and
Microsoft Mail for Windows clients are supported. Mail transports include
Internet via SendMail (SMTP), X.400 via MAILbus 400, or VMSmail over TCP/IP.
MailWorks for DEC OSF/1 software comes with the InfoBroker Server software,
a directory look-up server product. The InfoBroker may optionally be used to
connect to DEC X.500, a complete standards-compliant directory service that
can be used in an SMTP and/or X.400 environment.
MailWorks for DEC OSF/1 software can optionally be connected to MAILbus 400
Message Transfer Agent, creating a complete X.400 messaging system. Multiple
MailWorks nodes can be monitored using the POLYCENTER Network Application
Monitor.
Digital's award-winning 64-bit DEC OSF/1 operating system is compliant with
more than 60 standards-based protocols relating to the Internet alone. These
standards provide investment protection for both developers and end users.

The Internet AlphaServer 1000 4/200 will be available in January 1995. The

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Digital's new Internet AlphaServer packages include MailWorks Server for DEC
OSF/1 software as factory installed software. This software connects a
variety of clients to a choice of mail transport services. Transport options
include:
o Internet via SendMail (SMTP)
o X.400 via MAILbus 400
o VMSmail via SendMail's dx mailer
Client choices include Windows, Macintosh, MS-DOS, Motif (either SunOS or
DEC OSF/1), and TTY. cc:Mail for Windows and Microsoft Mail for Windows
software may be connected as clients to the MailWorks server. The MailWorks
Internet AlphaServer thus provides a consistent set of messaging services
and an integrated connection environment for the various desktop devices in
use in the workgroup.
MailWorks software connects users to the Internet and other messaging
products and environments that use the SMTP protocols. Users can extend
their existing TCP/IP networks or connect to an Internet access provider.
MailWorks Server for DEC OSF/1 software is also available as layered
software, on users' choice of Alpha hardware. (See the "New Versions of
MailWorks for OpenVMS with New Prices and License Options" article in this
issue.)
Optional Companion Software
The Internet AlphaServer (or MailWorks Server for DEC OSF/1 software as a
layered product) may be used as a building block in as large a network as
required. Used as shipped, it connects to other nodes using the SMTP
messaging protocol over the TCP/IP network protocols. The following optional
software may be added to increase its scope:
Management:
Multiple MailWorks nodes and other messaging products may be monitored over
a local or wide area network using the POLYCENTER Network Applications
Monitor. It keeps an eye on the many messaging and network functions that
may impede the flow of mail. The Motif graphical user interface displays an
iconized map of the environment, and allows the administrator to see trouble
spots immediately. Users can define alarms based on the needs of the
environment. (See SPD 45.53.xx.)
Directory Services:
Directory service for MailWorks for DEC OSF/1 software is provided by the
InfoBroker Server, which is used as a component of MailWorks software. It
ships with a local directory with a capacity of up to 5,000 entries.
DEC X.500 Directory Server may be added whenever an organization wishes to
implement a higher capacity high performance network directory service. When
MailWorks is used with DEC X.500, clients connected to the MailWorks server
automatically obtain service from X.500.
DEC X.500 directory may be used in an SMTP environment or an X.400
environment. (See SPD 45.16.xx for a complete list of optional X.500
software for MailWorks and SPD 53.32.xx for details on DEC X.500.)
Internet, X.400, and VAXmail:
MailWorks software makes it easy to live in a multi-protocol environment.
The MailWorks Server for DEC OSF/1 software can be connected optionally to
the MAILbus 400 Message Transfer Agent, creating a complete X.400 messaging
system. X.400 connection is an extra-cost option and requires additional
set-up. The MAILbus 400 Message Transfer Agent may be accessed on a remote
node. A single MAILbus 400 Message Transfer Agent can be used to
interconnect a number of MailWorks servers. MailWorks can be used to connect
to SMTP, to X.400, or both at the same time.
In addition, VMSmail addresses are honored. The message is sent via the
SendMail dx mailer to the destination VMS node.
With optional X.400 software installed, the user can send a single message
to users in SMTP and users in X.400. The server interprets the address and
prepares two copies of the message -- one a pure SMTP message for the
Internet and the other a pure X.400 message for the Message Transfer Agent.
All addressees can reply to all other addressees.

AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING
The Internet AlphaServer 1000 will be available in January 1995. The
Internet AlphaServer 200 will be available in February 1995. The Internet
AlphaServer 400 will be available in March 1995. (See the "Internet
AlphaServer" article in this issue for ordering information.)
MailWorks for DEC OSF/1 V1.2 is available as a layered product now.
MailWorks for DEC OSF/1 V1.5 will be available on December 30, 1994.
A license for 25 concurrent users is included with the Internet AlphaServer
1000. This package comes ready to run. MailWorks licenses are extra-cost
options on the Internet AlphaServer 200 and 400 packages. The software is
factory installed. Users need to enter the license authorization before they
can use the software.
Concurrent user licenses permit only that number of users to be actively
using the server at any one time. The actual number of registered users is
not limited.
Licenses are available in 1, 25, 50, and 100 user bundles, which are
additive. A capacity license also is available, permitting users to attach
as many concurrent users as they require. While any of these packaged
systems has sufficient compute power to support a sizeable community of
users, additional memory and disk are recommended or required in order to
provide satisfactory performance.
