I've been perusing the Web pages at www.digital.com; I especially like the
Grace Hopper page (given the ONR contrib.)
This is a totally unrelated question. Sixteen years ago I saw the movie
_Coma_ in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The next day I drove from Greenfield to
Cape Cod for the weekend. I got on the Boston Outer Loop at Maynard, and
nearly drove off the road when I looked to my left and saw...the Jefferson
Institute! (In _Coma_, the Jefferson Institute was where the comatose bodies
were kept in cold storage, suspended by wires, pending organ harvest.) It
looked exactly like the grim, sterile building in the movie, complete with
guard gate and "Moat".
It was the DEC building on the Outer Loop in Maynard.
So, can anyone confirm or deny this? Was I having a paranoid hallucination
or was I on the money? The resemblance was startling. Was the DEC building
used for a location shot in _Coma_?

| 3487.1 | Not a DEC building. Vague resemblance to PKO though. | ANGST::beck.ljo.dec.com::BECK | Paul Beck, TSEG (ANGST::BECK) | Thu Nov 03 1994 21:59 | 4 |
It was not PKO in Coma. The building in question is on Route 128. I remember some press about it when the movie came out, and shortly thereafter happened to be driving by (the facade used in the movie does not overlook 128; it's on a local road) and recognized it instantly. | |||||

It's the Zerox building on rt128. About 13 years ago, just after the
the movie was made there, DEC leased a floor in that building (mailstop
ZX). I worked there at the time so I can tell you first hand - many of
the exterior and interior shots were done in that building. There was
no connection with Digital however.

However, PKO & COMA & "a bad Movie" all seem to fit together.....
I understand now....

It was a Xerox building with Digital Order Processing Systems and a
publisher (maybe McMillan) leasing space. It was a temporary move from
Parker Street. It was a strange looking building with a great cafeteria
and was where AQS was developed.

It was as recent as last month when Xerox moved out of that building to
another one just across the town line in Waltham.

Yes it was the Xerox building that overlooks Rt128. It is located next
to the old Honeywell facility on Smith Street in Waltham.
I was working at Honeywell at the time of the filming and several of
our employees were extras for the movie.

The building in question is still XEROX occupied.
There is a training facility on the first floor.
The third floor, until recently (September), was leased by
Wentworth Technical School.
Also, I do believe that street address to be Spring St, Lexington.
I use to work there.....
