Conference 7.286::digital

    A few years ago I was involved in some cluster issues with Dupont, who
    had several VERY BIG clusters.

    Bob Palmer used Dupont in a talk some time back.  According to him, we
    lost 10M in sales from Dupont (FY94?).

    DUPONT is our best and largest customer. We service 2 large sites
    from our office and they are both active in Sales and service

    Dupont is concerned about Digital's long term viability. This issue is
    being addressed by top Digital mgt. Dupont has no formal hold on stopping 
    any business with Digital, to the contrary- they have recently intiated
    multiple projects to evaluate our technology for new initiatives.
    
    I will find the source of this memo, and respond accordingly.
    

    
    DuPont Fibers Division is still buying DEC equipment, both from us and
    in the products of others.  DuPont's corporate group recently set PC
    guidelines that didn't include our machines, but that had to do with
    cost and availability and not the viability of the company.  Even then, 
    the plants have been buying DEC PC's and workstations.

    Re .7 I'm the account rep for DuPont's Desktop Services MCS contract in
    Houston (as in I go onsite and fix their equipment). I've been trying
    for years to get some of our PC's in there for demos. I've constantly
    run up against the "they aren't guidelined by corporate" response.
    
    If you could, please provide more info about who and what site actually
    has Dec PC's. I'd love to crack this account open for our stuff as
    they're about to upgrade lots of PC's. Perhaps if I could point them to
    some other DuPonters that are using our boxes, I'd have a better
    chance. Feel free to contact me offline for more info.

    	Some long time readers may recall previous Notes in this conference
    regarding said customer's drug testing requirements and third party 
    service migration after a long standing "relationship" with Digital.
    
    	My comment is that after having serviced this customer and had
    personal friend's lives torn apart by the above mentioned items I
    now make an concious effort to avoid all of their products...
    This means Corian (sp), Teflon, Lucite, (TM's of DuPont
    acknowledgement) gunpowders, etc.

Well, this means for me to stop buying Reebock sneakers. It says DuPont
on it. ;^)

But who can garantee that Nike sneakers are produced without DuPont products...?

    First, I did NOT see any memo, however, I did hear this from a reliable
    Consultant and Distributor, who does NOT want to be mentioned.

    I hear this type of information all the time but nothing concerning
    such a strategic company as Dupont.  In most cases we are able to
    provide the Distributors and Customers the reassurances about DEC.
    However, there are those customers that something require someone 
    else to intervene.  
    
    I receive the information that I required.  Our Organization will be
    leaving in about 2 weeks to training our Business Partners in 24
    cities, which takes about a month.  This question mostly likely will
    arise.  Therefore, I have spoken with Bob Deninnis, Corporate Account
    Manager for Dupont.  Bob has reassured us that DEC and Dupont has a
    sound relationship.  Bob has offer to field the calls from those
    customers that require additional information.

    Sorry to hear that.  DuPont in the Carolinas has been a great customer
    to work with and work for.  Perhaps you can make an exception for
    Dacron and Kevlar.

    Digital spends millions of dollars buying photomasks from DuPont.I have
    found DuPont very enthusiastic partners.

    	No, I just forgot to mention them. I hate 100% synthetic clothing
    but I'll admit to owning Dacron/Cotton blend items. Gotta work
    on that. As for Kevlar, I'm glad I don't feel I need its body armor
    application (except when criticizing the manufacturer here) ;-).

	Kevlar is more than body armor in the traditional sense.  I'm
currently (only half-heartedly but I just need more incentive to actually
track down the leads I have) searching for knit-Kevlar gloves. You see, I
do a lot of theater lighting and knit-Kevlar gloves are both heat-resistant
and cut-resistant.  When you're trying to focus hot lighting instruments
from the top of a laddar or scaffold, both are desirable traits.

    Doug, check with a couple of speed shops or get the phone number for
    Summit Racing from any Hot Rod Magazine (They have a two page ad every
    month). There are some new mechanics gloves available for folks that
    need to work on their race cars between runs while the engine is still
    quite hot. Don't know what they're made of, but it sounds like what
    you're looking for.

Quick update to this note.  My sources have it that the DuPont end-users
refused to give up their ALL-IN-1 accounts (50,000 users).  A series of 
meetings and conference calls have taken place (last one was on Friday).
I would venture that DuPont will want to reduce their costs by consolidating
their VAX systems onto a fewer number of Alpha systems, and boosting user
productivity by deploying TeamLinks.  Bob Deninnis @DCO is the new account
manager.  Give him a call for details or to provide encouragement.
