| Microsoft sells a version of WINDOWS in Russian; it comes with keyboard
stickers. They also sell a version of WORD in Russian. They could be
ordered through their International Sales office at 206/936-8661.
It's also possible to use a package called Trans-Cyrillic Pro for
Windows (Linguists Software, 206/775-1130), which runs under English-
language WINDOWS and provides capability to use keys exactly as you
would on a Russian keyboard. It costs $99 and works well (I use it).

| We have an office in MLO called the Assistive Technology Group (DTN:
223-0109) who is in the business of building products which can be used
by individuals with disabilities. These are the folks that came up
with the original DECtalk units for speech synthesis a long time ago.
They may be able to offer some unique solutions to assit you on this
noble cause. Give them a call, they are very helpful and can offer you
some other options for considertation.

| FWIW,
WordPerfect is available in russian. ChiWriter is also very capable of
generating cyrillic script on any printer
(no, not daisywheel, I know :-))
Both are (I think) not to expensive.
But it may be worth to take a look at some shareware as well. On the
SIMTEL mirrors (e.g. MUCCS1 (europe) or HUMANE (eastern US)) you may
find the files:

I do not know what is usable since I understand he is disabled. MSDOS 6
has some additions (additional programs) for disabled e.g.
screen enhancements and keyboard enhancements. If you're interested,

| Stranger than coincidence:
I`ll be starting a course tonight on Russian I. It seems that I do not
have access to a Cyrilic language on my system. Does any one know how I
can contact a systems manager in either the Moscow or Kiev offices?

| Thanks to all who have replied, I am working on this and will reply to
all who have answered and or send mail to me.
Just thought you might like to know: I will meet with this chap (I do
not know his name) soon.
A little more about him for info: He does understand English well
(He has attended a language college here since the mishap) His
girlfriend has come out to South Africa and is now his wife! Hi arm
is not usable at all as all the nerves in it have ben severed. He uses
his stump arm with a brace and "Pointer/rod" to hit the key on
the keyboard.
I am looking forward to meeting with him and perhaps I will on his
behalf, post a message from him should we as Digital succeed in
making his life easier. I was told this evening that his wife (Olga)
has to hold a tea cup to his lips...so she nurses him full time.
And I complain when I have a headache!
The language translater looks like the way to go. I will attend to
this in the next couple of days and look at purchasing a copy. Also
thanks for the tip on the notes file. There is indeed a notes file for
PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED people.

| There is a freeware TrueType font: BROWNY::$1$DUA1:[HBD]cyrttf.zip
which I've been using (through Word). I could never figure out an
easy way to map the characters to the English keyboard, so just took
the plunge and learned Cyrillic touch typing. Other than that,
have had no problems with the font.
There is more information in the HUMANE::IBMPC_SHAREWARE notesfile,
note 1331.*.

Sent a memo off to Tania late yesterday and haven`t heard anything yet.
She might be on vacation. The MOW didn`t work but MOS01 did so I don`t
know if it even left the gate.

| There is a finnish company (which name <JL-Types?> I have at the office)
that produces 30+ russian/slavic/ex-soviet states charcter sets as
true type fonts. Remember, there are many besides russian.
Try contacting Olga White at MOW (DTN 869-0000) or 7-502-224-5517 for
help at Moscow end.

We have a software engineering center (which I am managing) in
Moscow Technopark. For those who know the area, it is in the
exposition park in the north of the city. We provide subcontracting
services to Digital centers in Western Europe and to the Russian
subsidiary (third party support and localisation).
Digital has a whole set of Russian products, like terminals and
All-in-1. We use the standard Digital Russian character set under
VMS and OSF, and the standard Microsoft software for Windows. There
are several suitable Truetype fontsets which work with our
Russian/Latin PC keyboards. For details you can contact
Sergei (MSCDEV::) Osipov (on holiday from 5/ sept - 19 sept) or
myself (MSCDEV::BOERS).

| Hi All, I have finally met with Dmitri and his wife Olga. I have asked
him to let me know what he would like most of all of all the proposals
that have been put forward. And they are in this order:
1. World Font for Translation.
2. The Russian Keyboard.
3. The Cyrilic Wordproc software.
And of course for me it is easiest to obtain item 3 then 2 and as 1 has
a reasonably high cost invovled, I will have to call the Manufacturers
and see if I could manage a discount.
His English is pretty good and he understands PC's very well. He would
probably be able to do all the installations himself. He has a
machanical Right forarm but he does not use the "Pincher/finger". I
have no idea how it functions. His left arm is intact but does not seem
to have any control of his fingers. He uses the downward motion
controled by his arm to "hit" the keys on the keyboard.
I will still make contact with our group that handles voice that was
mentioned earlier in the notes.
I invited them to the Digital stand at our local Computer show but his
mind was more with getting his own life in order. But non the less was
impressed with some of our Latest Mid range stuff. 3000-800. AXP 150
etc
