Conference 7.286::digital

	I know that I am thinking alot about what my next move in life
	would be. I wish I could think up the next big wave and catch
	it. :-)

	Ideally, I want to be independantly wealthy and never work again.

    I too have been thinking of life after DEC.  Just last night I told my
    husband that I wanted to go back to school - full time - for
    counselling.  My daughter told me that (after reading some book) most
    people have three careers in their lives.  I was a teacher (8 yrs), DEC
    for almost 10 yrs, so I'm due for my third!  Last night I went to the
    graduation of my youngest son from high school. I raised three
    beautiful children - guess that was a career too! For awhile I was
    letting the fact that I'm going to be 45 in December stop me from doing
    alot of things I want to do.  But I figure even if it takes 4 yrs to
    get a degree I'd still have a good 15 years working - God willing.
    
    So......I don't know how much longer I will work for DEC.  There is a
    WHOLE new world waiting for me! I'm looking at leaving DEC as a 'new
    birth'.

    well, I haven't been tapped yet, but I haven't been waiting around 
    for it to happen either.
    
    Ten months ago I purchased a Coin-Op Laundromat in Worcester in
    preparation to eventually leave Digital (tapped or voluntary). I
    was looking for a relatively low stress, low tech career and 
    a laundromat seemed a likely prospect. 
    
    So far it is working out real well. I have 5 excellent employees 
    that work at the laundromat while I manage and repair the machines. 
    
    I'm looking for a second laundomat now (either an existing one
    or build a new one). Whenever that happens I will probably be saying
    my goodbyes to Digital.

    My wife quit Digital about 9 months ago and we started a cookware store.
    Now I'll be helping out a little more.  On the to do list is; paint 
    the house, develop a new site for the vacation house, work on the old
    family ranch in the Napa Valley, go commercial fishing with my brother
    this summer and... oh that's right look for work!

    Since I just finished my MBA I would like to get into International
    Consulting. I will be taking Russian Language in Sept and my daughter
    already speaks Japaness. I`m sure I could get 10 or 15 thousand from
    the VA to get started.

    Once I'm out of here, the only job I will have in the future will be to
    find my wife another job, should she lose her present one. I keep
    encouraging her not to make anyone mad and lose it, so maybe I will be
    able to stay retired.

    I always wanted to run a neighborhood Supermarket or a Hardware store. 

    Are you ready for all the "logistics" of running a retail

    I love animals and I'm getting a wild hair to run off and be a dog
    groomer!!  I picture myself driving a block or two to a cute little
    salon, dressing casually, spliting my hours between days and evenings
    so I can enjoy my house more during the day.  Also, I'd like to have
    some kids and it would be a flexible job for that--maybe do it out of
    the house.  I'd like to go back to school part time too.  The one thing
    that reallys scares me is trying to put those little tiny bows on a dog
    with an attitude!!!!! :):)
    
    I like this note.  Its refreshing to see what people would like to do
    once its over here at Digital.  Usually I read this file with a sinking
    feeling and this note picked me up.

    I guess I'm still caught in the past. I like the security/comfort
    of working in the only place I've worked since college. While I
    bitch and complain about management decisions and our present work
    conditions I really and truely still like it here.
    
    Getting kicked out is probably the only way I'd have the balls to
    leave. Oh well. I enjoy cabinet making and teaching but don't know if
    either is an option for full time employment...all the techs in my area
    that have been canned had a job with Sorbus within a week.

    I surpose you could look at the possibility of being "layed off" as 
    a sever threat. It also could be a positive opportunity is some cases.
    
    Alot depends on each individual circumstance..If you are use to the finer
    monetary riches life has to offer, you might find making adjustments
    and pounding the pavement alittle unbearable..After all, what will the
    neigbors say when you start planting plastic flowers, and he/she is 
    home alot, and your luxury vehicle(s) turn into a pumpkin. 
    
    Now on the other hand, this could be the driving influence to do 
    something you always wanted to. Like own/start a new business, 
    spend some quality time with your family, move to that special part
    of the country you thought years about, finish those home projects
    that keep being placed on the back burner, go to the beach, go to
    Home Depot before the made rush, re-plan your future/career..
    
    I've changed my career path several times, and each time I thought I
    would have an elcer. But, each time turned out to be a plus and an
    educational experience. As I'm writing this, I'm still employed at
    Digital. The thoughts of my job going away scares me, but I have
    convinced myself that this could be just an another opportunity to
    to do/try something different..

    Sounds like me.  I started here when I was 18 and never thought I'd see
    DEC in this position.

    I guess theirs something wrong with my PC..The "e" that was on the 
    word "sever"(2nd line), fell off and landed on the word "mad"
    (15th line)..I always had a feeling my PC mis-spelled..

	Yea, I started when I was 19, driving a car and delivering SPR's
	to various sites. (SneakerNet) Who woulda thunk it that DEC would
	be in the condition it's in?

    	Actually, I was looking for a job when I found this one. That was
    nine years ago, so....
    
    	Personally I'd move the whole kit and kaboodle to southern Florida
    and go to work buying crummy houses in good neighborhoods and making
    them good houses again. Take $10K out each turn and watch the kids
    grow.
    
    	Digital is a job folks, the other stuff died three years ago. Only
    the people remain...

    TFSO or not I plan to leave in the fall and move to Israel. I hope to
    live on a Kibbutz....no bills, rent, car repairs, and home cooked meals
    cooked by someone else...heaven.
    
    Hopefully, I can get a job there working on a kibbutz that is HiTech
    thus my career lives on. I heard as a rumor that DEC is hiring in
    Israel and having duel citizenships help in landing technical jobs
    at American companies.
    
    The bottom line is ADVENTURE...I need a turning point after 11 years
    here.

    i will turn over the keys to my house  ( i lost all equity in it thanks
    to the real estate crash) to the bank and open up a TCBY yogurt 
    franchise with whatever severance/accumulated savings i get.. i love
    their product .. fat free for the most part and tastes incredible..
    and is essentially brain dead work.. once in awhile you have to pour 
    water into a machine and add some powder and close it up.. then it
    makes great tasting stuff that you pull a lever and spill into a cone..
    
    	then you take money and make change.. then go home and start again
    	then next day.... i can't wait!!
    
    
    

    I dunno but since I DID just get layed-off I guess I'll have 23 weeks + 
    to think about it !
    
    I agree with a past note... I am looking at this as possibly the best
    thing that could have happened to me.
    
    I am VERY sorry and upset for the additional workload that my friends
    here will have to shoulder because of my departure. The last 12 years
    have been good ones and DEC ( yes *DEC*) has been a good place to
    collect a paycheck. I wish everyone the best of luck !

    sorry to see you go Pete, but not to fear for us of the living
    dead...the current pot full of hot water gets poured into a smaller pot
    with the usual results.....the excess ends up on the floor.  Customers
    will leave, service will decline, revenue remains the same per capita,
    its just smaller in total.  This is a short term solution for the wrong
    problem

    And, when Digital is gone, some of the former high-levels will be between
    jobs, sipping their drinks, picking out BMW's for their kids to drive to
    college and lining up their next position... looking for another
    'Digital' that wants to hire 'some new blood from outside', just as DEC
    did. Then, they can apply some of the same toad n' crony skills they
    nurtured and honed while here.
       
    It wasn't the indians that ran us into the ground... it was the chiefs.

You think this has been bad?!  A manager with 17+ years with Digital layed off
her group, then got layed off herself.  Whilst in the exit interview she was
informed that Personnel is gearing up to lay off 20,000 more people in August
1994.  The population has to be decreased by September 1994.

Whether this is true or not I'm not sure, however, this individual was at a 
manager's level that had access to this type of confidential information in the 
past.  We can only sit back and wait and see.....

I recognize a lot of the electronic signatures that are signing off.  A lot of
these individuals have provided solutions to problems posted in conferences.  Is
there going to be anyone around?

    Purely speculative, but here goes:
    
    To be profitable in this calendar year (the stated goal), 
    we must have a profitable second quarter in FY95.
    
    Salary expenses will be reduced before we enter that quarter,
    so that costs incurred during the entire quarter are lowered.
    
    The cost of laying off employees, i.e. severance pay, will also
    be paid (or at least accounted for) before we enter that quarter,
    otherwise those costs threaten Q2 profitability.  
    
    Since I'm not an accountant, I don't know if it's possible to account for 
    severance expenses in Q1 that aren't paid until Q2, but if so then 
    that might lessen the pressure to hurry the layoffs before Q2.
    
    I'm not endorsing or objecting to any of this - I'm just saying what
    I think *will* happen and the reasons behind it.

    I would also speculate, that if we show signs of moviving towards
    profitability in Q1 and achieve it in Q2, then the SLT will be able
    to reward themselves from the profitablity incentive program.   

    (IMHO) It is sad that after 2+ years, the SLT can not articulate as to
    what Digital wants to be when it grows up.  Yes, there has been much
    DECspeak with its various spins has to who, what and why we are where 
    we are today.   But, layoffs are (seemingly) the only solution.

        I wouldn't blame the SLT for everything -- it's the BOD, I'm
        sure, which even more wants downsizing commitments to be
        reached.

        The only thing they would want more than downsizing is
        *profit*, but apparently nobody has committed to that. :-{
