Now, if Microsoft wouldn't make the certification process such a pain
and we instructors were given more preparation time, we'd really have
a winning combination. As an instructor, I'm in the process of
becoming certified to teach Microsoft's Win32 Programming course (I
already teach *our* version of that course). The rules for becoming
certified have changed at least three times since I started the
process. The course materials, written by Microsoft, changed with very
little notice. The time I need to prepare to take the three levels of
examinations to get certified has essentially gone away because we are
so understaffed. And, with only a couple of exceptions, the contract
people that *have* been hired to teach the Microsoft courses have done
terribly. Certification isn't a guarantee of teaching ability, and I'm
not sure Microsoft has come to that conclusion yet.

| In terms of our people learning from Microsoft's TechED, it was broadcast live
via satellite around the U.S. (and beyond?). We had a full house here in
Rochester, NY of customers and Digital employees. I assume the program was
received in our engineering centers also. So, just because you didn't see any
Digital software engineers there doesn't mean they didn't benefit from the
event.

I saw the DEVCAST session, I thought it was very good. There wasn't much
interest locally though, I think I'm the only one that saw it thru. Which
is a shame because it's broadcast in the clear and can be received by
domestic satellite receivers.
I thought the Digital slot could have been better. The good point was that we
were there, on the other hand we gave a hardware focussed demo in what was
basically a software show. When we could have been showing how compatible
our software was the guy had to open the box and show everyone the wires!
I've only seen two of the DEVCAST's but they seem to have a common theme of
a complete business solution engineered out of standard MS components. It
would be great if one of the systems they ran was an Alpha running Access,
Excel, ... or even our OLE Gateway to Objectbroker.

| The DEVCAST's were only PART of TECHED...
I went to as many of the sessions (CHICAGO, VB/EXCEL, etc.) as time
allowed... I met tons of people... I talked to lots of potential
customers for Digital Learning Services... I met many Microsoft
folks... I asked questions of the M.S. Engineers...
None of that could be accomplished by merely watching a DEVCAST.
Digital blew a big-time opportunity. Engineering-wise, at least.
Like my old football coach said: "we'll get 'em next year!"

Does anyone know if these are available to home satellite users?
I.e. encrypted, which band, which bird??? For me, watching/recording
these at home is easier than DVN.

| The last DevCast was broadcast in the clear on the following satellites
for US reception:
Ku Band : Galaxy 7
SBS5 (this is the one that DVN views)
C Band: Galaxy
I do not know if these will be the same for the next DevCast but I would
be happy to post that information when it is available if there is an
interest.

| OK... TECH-ED 95 is again in New Orleans... (Also being held in
Germany, Australia, Japan and Taiwan) (see dates below)
Registration fee is $1,195. Call 1-800-433-9996 or (612)550-6390,
6:30A.M. to 5:30P.M. Pacific time, Monday through Friday. I quote from
the Jan. '95 issue of Education Forum (a Microsoft publication):
"Tech-Ed gives you information you need to use Microsoft products more
efficiently to create, integrate, and support BackOffice, Office, and
Windows-based solutions. A how-to conference with more than 300
technical sessions, Tech-Ed 95 also includes a full day of keynote
presentations by Microsoft executives, and dozens of additional
activities and events. At Tech-Ed 95, you see how multiple Microsoft
products are used to solve actual business problems and learn how you
can provide similar solutions."
I've been told there will be upwards of 8,000 attendees this year
(there were about 5,500 last year). There are 100 "vendor" booths in
the exhibitor area, and ample opportunity to "see what's happening".
Digital Learning Services will be there, though I have no knowledge if
any other DEC organization will be represented. Last year there were
two Digital booths, and plenty of opportunity for attendees to use our
AXP based products.
