I have a customer that wants am automated way to interface
to D&B. From the information I have gathered so far it looks
like you can connect in different ways. I was looking
for someone who might have implemented a similar solution.

| I think what you may want is a VTX application called EMDS (External
Market Data System). It allows the user to query D&B and Computer
Intelligence databases. I don't know what use you need to make of the
data, but if it is for things like lead generation, market sizing,
installed base (CI, not D&B!) information (i.e. sales and marketing
stuff, as opposed to credit stuff), EMDS might meet your needs.
To get at it, at the VMS prompt, type VTX EMDS. If you've got access to
a VTX server, it'll throw you into the registration screen. Register
yourself (there's no charge for access, they ask you to register to
keep track of usage for reporting needs, and to figure out where your
reports should be mailed) and then follow the directions to define your
queries. When you've defined your queries, the system submits the
report request and will mail back you finished query via VAXMail or A1.
There's a guaranteed turnaround of 24hrs, but most stuff runs in a lot
less than that.
If you have questions about whether the system meets your needs, talk
to either Chris Hallgren (223-6101), the application manager, or Perry
Coppola (223-0906), the support person for the app. They're both very
helpful.

One method of interfacing with D&B is via a PC based client
provided (sold) by D&B for a rather inexpensive price. The
tool allows you to package up queries, which are then delivered
(synch mode) to a D&B backend server for processing.

| PC is one way. But it is not the right way.
I sold D&B on a "many to many" approach. D&B buys a small server from
us and then installs it on the customer's network, with a high speed
link back to themselves. Once the server is installed, it provides
access to all D&B products for all customer desktops on the customer's
network. Reference Kodak.
BTW, this "many to many" approach/idea resulted in D&B getting 5 times
the annual revenue from Kodak in the first 3 months.
Needless to say, the servers are flying !
