| 2368.1 | Keep those mistakes rolling in | VINO::FLEMMING | Have XDELTA, will travel | Fri Feb 12 1993 07:26 | 11 |
| | Well, one screwy thing that happened here - first time last week. I
bank with Shawmut. However, my check stub said my pay had been
deposited into the Bank of Connecticut. Now since the account number
was correct, I didn't panic but I did call payroll. I got someone who
was obviously feeling overwhelmed by the number of inquires received
and was told that the money went to the correct bank - it was just
an error in the code fed into the field that got printed on the stub.
Ok, they are trying to get their smaller checks into production and
everyone makes mistakes (particularly when they use computers) so
I said thanks, had a chuckle about with this person about the
harassment and got on with it. Same thing happened yesterday.

| 2368.4 | Another payroll quirk this week | CADSYS::CADSYS::RITCHIE | Elaine Kokernak Ritchie | Sun Feb 14 1993 14:06 | 16 |
| | Another interesting thing happened this week. For those in the US who
have both a SAVE deduction and an OPT OUT payment in their paychecks,
US Benefits changed the policy this week, kind of without telling
anyone. I haven't figured out if it is to my benefit or not.

Here's the change. Now, they include your OPT OUT payment in your
total income, before figuring your SAVE deduction. This increases your
SAVE deduction, and reduces the taxes you pay, since SAVE is pre-tax.
But SAVE seems to be the only thing affected. ESPP deductions are
    still done the old way.

I found out about it after sending mail to CANON::PAYROLL_QUESTION.
They told me it was a change in policy. Why weren't we warned? It
sure screwed up my paycheck, and it wasn't easy to figure out.

| | Re .4

I believe the EPP has always been calculated on the total salary,
before even the "pre tax" is taken into account. Therefore there
should be no change there. (Should be x% of your gross unless you
have the "extra share" option in which case it is a little larger).

| | re: .6
My point is the same is true for SAVE:
>> always been calculated on the total salary, before even the "pre tax" is
>> taken into account
The policy seems inconsistent. If OPT OUT is income, and it is taxed, then it
should be considered income for all deductions that are a percentage of gross.
Elaine
p.s. I never thought about this before, because it was done consistently for ESPP
and for SAVE. Apparently it was wrong, but consistent

there is a bank subsidiary they own or are owned by in Connecticut.

| | Actually, it's sortof the other way around: Connecticut National Bank
was recently acquired by Shawmut N.A. (Shawmut's national holding
company), and officially changed its name to Shawmut as of 1/1/93.

(I know this because I've been working on some mortgage financing
with this bank; I applied in 12/92 and around the beginning of
January my banker called sounding frazzled and apologetic that he'd
dropped some calls because he's been running around like crazy
    dealing with the name change...)

| 2368.11 | Checks Opening Up Before Distribution? | MSDOA::JENNINGS |  | Wed Feb 17 1993 09:10 | 7 |
| | I had a different kind of payroll problem. Whatever type of glue
they use to seal checks/statements wasn't working very well last
week. I noticed last week that my check was "coming apart" at the
edges when I picked it up. Not enough so that anyone could see
anything, which ruled out intentional opening. I looked a couple
of other employees checks and sure enough, theirs were starting to
separate as well... Hope this was just a quirk last week.

| | The new style paycheck just hit BTO. I haven't looked closely enough
yet to see what there is for changes in data, if any.

Just a few more DEC checks heading my way, and the style changes. I'm
    surprised it's not pink! 8-)

| | Right - the timecard is a separate piece which detaches from the rest of
the form which unfolds to give pretty much the layout of the left hand side
of the old paystub. You AREN'T supposed to crease and tear along the bottom
perforation!
