    I have a mfg. engr. friend under contract to ABO, and one of his curent
    projects is to relocate module operations (bottom line) to Mexico. 
    This would leave ABO a Stage II site.  My assumption is that DEC would
    not spend this kind of money just to close shop.  /wlb

    Well, lots of us would have gone broke if we'd bet that DEC would do
    something in the most sensible (to us) way.  DEC spent a lot of money
    starting up some products in Puerto Rico that are now going to be made
    in Albuquerque.

    Latest rumor I heard about plant closings was that there would be three
    sites leftin the U.S.... Colorado Springs, Albuquerque, and one back
    east (Hudson?).   Other than that, everything is up for grabs (meaning
    potential for closing).  Note recent flurry over Roxbury, MA.
    

    Of course these are just "rumors" but what did you mean by your comment
    about 3 sites "leftin" the US...did your rumor state those plants would
    be closed or remain open? Being in a fairly large manufacturing plant
    (Shrewsbury) where we are so busy that we have a 7 day work week due
    to much OEM/internal work, none of us "feel" we have anything to worry
    about in the near (6+ months anyway) future. We have lost people in the
    building but not in the manufacturing end...yet?

    Does anyone realize how much money the US gov't gives a US company to
    move x# of US jobs "off-shore" (Mexico included)?  And also how much
    money a company can save in taxes to work outside of the US?  As well
    as how much a comany can save in overhead outside of the US?  It
    wouldn't surprise me in the least for us to follow trend and move off
    shore.  As for PR closing: We don't have a need for that type of
    internal business unit anymore; it's much cheaper for us to by PCB made
    externally (Why GSO is closing, also?).
    
    Saying that we can't close ABO (?) is living in that dream of it can't
    happen here.  Especially if ABO is an assembly plant, we can get that
    anywheres.  Now, closing HLO would be a different story; granted we
    wouldn't have to worry about EPA regs in Mexico, but to shut down HLO
    and rebuild it in Mexico even with all the tax/money credits could
    possibly be devastating to us.
    
    I won't bet on anything until after this economic world war is over.

    That last line is one to live by here (GSO).  Actually, we're being
    sold (probably).  We just have no idea of win.

    nations, read "America: What Went Wrong?"  
    
    I forget the authors' names but they are Pulitzer Prize
    winning reporters from the Philadelphia Inquirer.
    
    Warning: this book will really frost you off.  If you read
    it, prepare to be extremely angry.  It is exceedingly
    well documented (mostly from IRS and other government
    sources).

    Sale of the Greenville, SC, plant was announced this morning, to be
    accomplished "within 30 days."  So in September the 475 Digital
    employees at the Greenville facility will become employees of a
    consortium operated by AMP and another company (whose name I don't
    recall exactly at the moment).
