How can we expect our customers and investors to have
any confidence in the company, if we (DEC) have no
    	confidence in ourselves?

        just wondering

I remember in "Operating System 101" when I learned it, my professor
asked me to solve "Bootstrap" problem ?

    I got C for that, what's your score ? Sounds familiar ?!!

Well, since ELF doesn't indicate anyone with the surname of SYSTEM, apparently
you didn't care to follow your own advice.

I am, along with the stock market..we closed under
$37 a share...sounds like Wall Street has lots of
confidence in DEC now. Moral stinks, people are
looking over shoulders wondering who'll be the
one cut. We gotta get focused, or we may be getting
    		paid in YEN!

| Most people are focussed...

Maybe it's time for someone to say:

"Well, Jack, you've had two years, and our bank account's down
half a billion, profit has gone, shares about 40% of what it
was when we switched Jack's, so...

As Pier_Carlo might say: 'Ciau, Jack'."

Then we realize that, while VAX was a different style of computer,
Alpha is not. It's just better and faster [today!] and our only real
differentiation is the software [read: Operating Systems, Networking,
Tools and Utilities] and the brains (or luck) to be MIGRATING via Open
VMS and OSF and then get down to being, not All things to all people,
but the world's premier General purpose computer company.

Disband any committee with more than 8 members, remove any
'manager' with less than 12 working reports, dismantle GIA and anything
else which stifles the flow of info and enthusiasm. FIRE (no packages
at all!) anyone who is a 4. Take a stand after that that Digital will
run Digital, and while we would be happy to PRESENT our strategies and
directions to the media, we will not be forming them based upon
reporter and analyst comments. Then say "No layoffs until we're broke
so the 'individual contributors' can stop worrying about whether or not
they'll be eating next week and put their energies into doing the job
    rather than saving the job.

Just for laughs begin training people. Like the managers with the big
egos and nothing behind them. There are countless others.

Remove from authority and maybe from the company anyone who says "It's
the economy" or uses the word Business - as in Business Case or
    Business Unit.

Focus? Good G*d, people! We manufacture and sell computers of many
shapes and sizes. We - as a computer manufacturer with some pinache
and no little intelligence - engineer and sell system software,
development tools, etc. appropriate to making the most of those
computers. We service what we sell. We'll help you make the most of
what we sell. This is not difficult to comprehend, is it?

    Straighten out!

    Don
Who'ld like Digital to stick around long enough to retire from it.

You are very much correct. I misquoted the stock price; it's a
little over $53 per share, the last time I checked.

    		Thanks for correcting my error,
