1847.0. "What I think our commercials should be..." by KYOA::KOCH (It never hurts to ask...) Sun Apr 12 1992 20:20
I know that some people agree with our current commercials, but I feel
we need to tell the world who Digital is and where we came from. In
this light, I have some ideas for commercials based on Digital's rich
    heritage of invention and innovation.

    1. Ken started the company by building logic boards. He bought used
garden furniture and fish tanks to prepare the circuit boards. The
commercial should show this using B&W film such as that current
stockbroker commercial. Then it should fast forward to now where it
shows us building the most advanced computer chips in the world with
some fish tanks in the background. We should also hit the environmental
side of it telling people how we invented the water cleaning process
and GAVE it to the industry to reduce the use of chloroflourocarbons.

    2. We should talk about our networking and how in the 70's we connected
Digital to itself locally, the 80's where we connected and built the
world's largest private peer-to-peer network and how WE are the company
to connect every company's network in today's global economy.

    3. Next, we should show how we started with the VAX-11/780, how big it
was and how we have progressed. We should show how we built an
architecture and system that runs more operating systems that we
originally built for it. Finally, we should show our dedication to
investment protection by telling them how the original 780 still runs
the most current version of the operating system. Maybe we can find one
of the original prototypes and show it running V5.5 of VMS (and
    Ultrix).

    4. In terms of the open message, we should tell how we spend
engineering $$$ and time working on all the important committees all
over the world. We should tell them that Digital was doing "OPEN"
before the industry (and Digital) knew what "OPEN" was! We had multiple
operating systems which interacted on some level. We should talk about
PATHWORKS and how it allows customers to integrate those 100 MILLION
personal computers into a single, seamless, unified environment.

We have the widest range of products and services for solving the
computer problems of today. Let's tell someone about it. We need "HIM
'EM HARD" commercials, not these laid back "GIVE US A CALL SOMETIME"
    commercials.

In fact, that is probably where I've seen .0 before.
Please continue this discussion there.

| | I'd prefer to get a wider audience from this notes file. I would like
to terminate the discussion in GERBIL::US_SALES_SERVICE and continue
the discussion here. Is this acceptable?
