I know someone that would be interested in such a group. Could you
keep me informed as to when and where this group may be meeting. Will
    it communicate via modem?

| | This is opinion, not legal advice.
There are many companies with the word 'Digital' in the title. If I
wanted to create a company called "Digital Diaper Service" I doubt there
would be a problem with it. If I started a computer company called
"Digital Electronics Corporation" it may be in a bit of a gray area if
customers began to confuse it with Digital Equipment Corporation.
However, 'DEC' is property of Digital Equipment Corporation thus any name
you come up with would/should avoid the use of the word 'DEC'.

| | If and when I get laid off I'll go out and look for another job not
commiserate with others who share my fate. Remember, this is a
job, nothing more nothing less. If it ever got to the point where I'd
have to seek out such a "support group" to try and console myself,I'd
hope someone would check me in to the "funny farm".

| | I agree, Ken. I'd make a deliberate effort to divorce myself forever
from DEC, its products, and its people. There's nothing special about
DEC anymore...its just another struggling company, poorly led, offering
    routine jobs.

| | A support group should be forward-looking and be focused
on networking, achieving new goals and providing mutual support and
    assistance in achieving them.

Many such groups already exist and some are affiliated with local
    church groups.

Of course, there is no reason why a group of ex-DECies could not form
such a support group and perhaps they may...

I can see it now. A "support group" of ex Deccies all crying about how
bad they feel and their woes since losing job instead of getting out
and actually doing something constructive like trying to find another
job. But wait, they all tell each other about this great new job they
heard about at BLTZVCK corp. and how great the other one would do at it.
(snicker - snicker . I went there yesterday and got the job.)

There is a similar idea being proposed/discussed in note #300
of the TOOK::UU conference called "worknet" (Press KP7 to add).
Also, why limit such a program to ex-DECies? There is a program
in place in some 80 different cities across the U.S. known as the
"Time Dollar" or "Service Credit" program, which allows (primarily
retirees, but increasingly intergenerational) groups of people to
network their skills and support each other based loosely on a
system of exchanging one's time for "Service Credits" which can
later be "spent" on other services. For more information, write

| | I tried to reply earlier, but got the unfamous: "Cannot ...."

By that time I thought "support group" meant ex DEC'ies to
run some sort of customer support business. E.g RT11, RSTS, MUMPS,...
"mature technology support", where I believe that there are
true business opportunities, once you got the sources.

In that case the name becomes REALLY important, also legally,
    (where I don't know anything).
If I'd do such a business, I'd call it something like:
    "Real Time Support..."
The hint: "we are ex-DEC'ies knowing that stuff" is important
in the startup, but would fade over time and if you are successfull,
hinder you to pick up other ex-whatsoever "mature" support business that
starts to pile up on "strategic" junk-yards here and there.

I guess I misunderstood the notion of "support" in the base note,
    but just in case.....

re .0: As the replies have made abundantly clear, this conference
is not the place to get useful legal advice. Even if anyone
had offered any, you'd have to take it with a grain of salt.
If you want a definitive answer, ask the Legal Department.
Even if it turns out that there might be grounds for "legal
