| | You might try poking through 598.* (especially .35 and following)
about the retirement rumors. The latest round may be another "media-
    sponsored" event.

| | I recall that during the recent controversy about how Digital's
released its Q3FY89 sales/earning projections, that a Digital
spokesperson was quoted as saying Digital was/had actively
considered early retirement programs. This response was apparently
to a directly question concerning cost reduction/cutting efforts
within Digital to relieve margin pressures.
Did anyone else see this? It might have been in either the business
press (i.e., Wall Street Journal, ...) or the computer industry
press (e.g., Computer Systems News, Digital Review, ...).

    Regards,
    Joe

| | I'm not sure how much truth there may be to any early retirement
incentive. Past history has shown that whenever an early retirement
incentive is offered by any company that the first to take advantage
of it are the people that the company least wants to lose. These
are usually the people that have been with the company the longest
and have probably feeling a need to move on to other fields. Maybe
the top engineer in the business suddenly developes an urge to go
into the flower growing business for a change. Usually the people
who have marketable skills and are looking for a change will be
the first to leave, leaving the company with the least experienced
    and least senior employees.

| | re:-1> Early retirement plans can backfire badly for just the opposite
reasons. If the company selects a time line that is too
early, most of the young, aggressive employees will leave,
leaving	the company with the employees that are already
'retired' and collecting big checks... This is what
happened in WANG a few years ago, and they had to end
the early retirement plan prematurely because the 'wrong'
people were leaving. Digital will reduce headcounts
through attrition and eliminating contract workers.

| | Please continue any discussion of early retirement, rumors
or otherwise, in topic 598. Discussion of "downsizing" in
manufacturing can continue in this topic, but please try to
avoid starting or spreading rumors about it. There is some
truth to efforts to "downsize" manufacturing in some parts
of the world, and for some products. Informed opinions are
welcome. Rumors and random speculation aren't.
