    The question we want to have answered, Mr. Bob Comarow, is why you
    don't have your own account but use Gary Mccready's account?
    
    The One Penn Plaza facility is the "location" of the New York District,
    the New York Financial District, the New York Volume District, and
    the New York Area.  Estimates on the number of employees assigned
    vary from 500 to 2500, our percentage of worlwide sales volume from
    2 to 10 percent.
    
    There's a lot of "ought to haves" that any location our size should
    have.  You might put showers first, I'd put a small infirmary or
    a Digital Credit Union branch first.
    
    If this bothers you, you've got to take it up with your management
    as I have.

While we're taking requests for NYO (1 Penn Plaza), how about a cafeteria?

    Until 1 Penn Plaza gets adequate air conditioning facilities for
    the building, showers should definitely be at the top of the list...

    Pat,  you asked the $64,000, why do I share Gary's account?
    You may have noticed that there is a shortage of computers
    in the NYO district-consequently, in Ed. Services, and we were told
    to share existing accounts.   
        
    Ah, to be the cobblers children!
    
    Ed services network of state of the art 730s of course are not
    on the E-Net.   I really appreciate the cooperative nature of the
    "old timer" instructors sharing their accounts.  Of course, 
    I have been called  Bob McCready.                               
                   
    However, when the NY cluster is in place, we will have accounts
    on the E-Net.
    
    Back to showers.
    
    I assure you, there are shower facilities in Bedford.  I saw 'em. DC
    too. While it's not crucial, it would be great to be able to work out
    during  lunch hours.   I'm sure I'm not the only one, and employee
    fitness solutions (or showers for us solitary types) pay off in
    improved attendance and such.  I'm wondering if anyone knows where
    this corporate policy is stated or what it says.  
                       

    ZKO has showers too (in each building), plus a "Wellness Center"
    (exercise equipment, etc.)  I've seen showers in HLO (Hudson, MA)
    too.
    
    But if NYO is not in a DEC-owned building, adding showers may be
    tricky.

        Re the location of the showers in Bedford - they are in
        building D, first floor.  That's at the other end of the
        facility from the classrooms (buildings B and C), but not
        very far from the Digital Credit Union office.

    We have showers here in Albuquerque also. They were installed when
    a group of engineers took to running during their lunch break. Now,
    I can't verify that that was the reson they were installed, but
    it all did happen right about the same time.

    	We have showers too...doesnt everyone?  And, in Marloboro there
    are tennis courts too.  Also, we have a ping pong room...a break
    now & again for employee who work hard.  Caffeterias are available
    for those facilities over a couple o' dozen people!!!  We have
    several!!

    The building which houses my group (among others) is a small rented
    building, with a capacity of approximately 300 (I believe).  The
    building has one shower stall for each gender;  I haven't yet heard
    complaints of having to queue for the shower.
    
    I believe that the groups who did the renting negotiated with the
    building owners for things like showers, HVAC (for the machine room),
    probably more electrical service than they'd dreamed of (for the
    machine room), and some other odds and ends.  The fact that we'd
    started talking with the building owners before the building was
    finished probably didn't hurt, though.
    
    I've gotten the impression that major factors for getting this sort
    of thing include foresight and willingness to pay.

    Here in Westminster, we have a men's locker room with 3 showers,
    and a women's locker room (can't tell how many showers since I am
    really not welcome in there!).   We also have a "fitness room"
    (called "DECfit") which has weight training equipment, a heavy punching
    bag, stair-climbing equipment, rowing equipment, and maybe some
    other things.  They conduct at least 3 aerobics classes a day (morning,
    noon, and after work).  We also have a "jogging path",  although
    I have not yet seen anyone use it.  (Those of us who run use the
    roads and sidewalks.)   
    
    We had lockers and showers in Northboro too.  And Northboro wasn't
    even a DEC-owned building.

    Digital in Stow has 4 ladies' showers and I think the same number
    for men.  They even have a "handicapped" shower to accomodate
    wheelchairs (I hope they are made of stainless steel).  They also
    have a mirrored exercise room where they hold aerobic and jazz exercise
    classes (co-ed of course).  
    
    Outside, there is a 2 court tennis court, basketball hoop and half
    court, baseball and soccor fields, 1/2 mile running track (circles
    the building) and a piece of land that is used for gardening in
    the summertime ($10 / plot).    
    
    I believe that Stow is company owned and it is a lot easier to obtain
    things.  Where I work now at IND, there is one shower but I don't
    think many women use it.  There must be a men's one too.  Only fair,
    right.  
    
    As for cafeterias, Stow had a nice one with all the things you could
    ever want.  IND, has vending machines and a place to sit down but
    it no way near compares with the "gourmet" treatment in the Stow
    Facility.   
    
    I wouldn't mind having a bicycle rack here but I don't think that
    exists.  I guess I bring my bike upstairs with me.

  LMO2 has about 350 people on first shift. It is on a long-term 
lease but was built to DEC's specs. We have two showers each for 
men and women. We have an unusually large number of runners here;
occasionally there is a wait for the men's showers.
  I heard that the DEC running club had to apply a lot of pressure before they
talked DEC into installing showers in certain "old" DEC-owned
plants. Installing showers in an existing building is very ex-
pensive and usually means tearing out a wall.

    The showers in MRO1 are upstairs above the credit union (in MRO2
    they are in the lowest level, near the aerobics room; I don't know
    about MRO3).  The tennis court is in the back parking lot.  I'm
    not a tennis person, but I have been told that the court is not
    great because it is aligned in such a way that the sun is in one
    player's eyes all the time (presumably meaning it is set up N-S,
    since most people seemed to play at lunchtime).  There used to be
    a pingpong table in one of the storeroom areas, but I don't know
    what becaome of it (may still be there) - you had to know the right
    people to get into that area at all.

We have showers in most of the buildings here in Reading, England.

In July we take a five year lease on a building that has among other
things a swimming pool -- and a bar.

    Any idea about how to get this in NY.  NYers tradionally spend more
    time commuting than anywhere else, and have more stress than most
    places:  so the opportunity to improve our health during the day  
    and reduce stress is important.  
    
    Somewhere it is written?  

        WE have a building here in Sydney, with 900+ People (and two
        other smaller facilities) with 300 yards.
        
        We have no showers, no vending machines, no cafeteria, no gym,
        no Credit Union, no parking, and inadequate computing resources.

    I have seen no written policy.
    
    Showers first started about 1980 at DEC. TWO (a leased building)
    was one of the first locations. These days, most all "greater Maynard
    Area" buildings have showers--even the Mill!
    
    I think that shower and athletic facilities are sponsored either
    by Employee Activities or by the Medical department. If NYO has
    either, then talk to them. If not, call the corporate departments
    listed in the phone book.

    In the context of what's possible in New York.  There are a lot
    of good indoor tennis courts, racketball courts, health clubs, etc.
    in the neighborhood of West 34th Street.
    
    Some time ago, it was suggested to our local Finance and Administration
    people that they seek out one of these places and guarantee them x
    memberships in exchange for a nice big discount.  Other large companies
    do this, and make no mistake about it we're a large presence here in
    New York.
    
    So I suggest it be followed-up with F&A if you're still interested.

    	Why does everyone want everything "written"?!?!  Gees, if you
    have to write it down, you have big problems!!  We have a bar in
    our cost center...others do too, but we dont go to our mgrs and
    say "I wanta bar because it says so here on page 69!!"  Be innovative!
    Organize something yourself!  Why wait for your mgr to force some
    benefit on you!  Forget lookin' into the P&P manual to see if you
    get this or that because you have 211 people, 2 dogs, & 1 cat...so
    you should have this or that!

ZKO has showers *and* has arranged a discount on membership in the health
club at the Tara next door.

    MRO! had showers quite a bit before 1980.  I think the story was
    that the showers (and the bicycle racks; not sure about the tennis
    court) were paid for with money collecting by recycling computer
    paper.

    AKO has three shower stalls in one of the men's rooms. I assume
    the same is true of the women's room next door.
    
    On the other hand, as of a 1� years ago (when I transferred to
    AKO), Parker St. had no showers in any of the buildings, and
    you can't get much more major a site than Parker St. From what
    I understand, Maynard's water department was the stumbling
    block.

    Pat - I checked out the local health club, the only one I found
    in walking distance }i- It's only $1500.  I can't afford it.  Maybe
    what I was told in the other facilities was inaccurate.  That's
    too bad-for business.  Healthier employees do better.

    workers, kicking and screaming.  Just couldn't wait to move in ...
    
    Kind of reminds me of the days of ZK1 with the hardhats and single

      Maynard draws its water from wells and a reserve reservoir
    in Stow, Mass.  I believe DEC is supplied by the Town of 
    Maynard.  Sewers are connected to the towns sewer system.
    The former board shop and storm run-off and snow go into
    the Assabet.  A ground water purification system has been
    installed next to Bldg. 11 to decontaminate the ground
    water underneath the Mill, which was polluted by the 
    Maynard board shop (or so I am told).

    UCO and UCT (both in Palo Alto, CA) each have over 100 people. Both
    have showers because it is required by local zoning. We do not have
    cafeterias and the nearest DCU office is in Colorado.

    Having recently visited Palo Alto, I think I would trade my local
    DCU office and cafeteria for floor-to-ceiling walls!

    I used to live in Palo Alto, and I have some relatives who still
    live there.  Considering the life-style of Palo Alto residents,
    requireing showers is a good move on the part of the city planners.

And I would most certainly trade the ZK cafeteria for any one of a number of
restaurants within walking distance of UCO & UCT.  And the ZK cafeteria is
supposedly one of the better cafeterias in DEC/New England.
