| | I have never seen an official policy. I suspect each location has
its own policy, which in some places may be unwritten. I still
    have my un-pictured badge.

| 219.2 | Not an option... | JAWS::DAVIS |  | Mon Nov 17 1986 08:15 | 11 |
| | I don't believe trade-up was optional with the new picture badges.
When I got mine, everyone was called in to turn in their old badge,
get their picture taken and get a new badge. The main reason is
for security. I know of some customers that had complained that
DEC employees didn't have proper identification (i.e. a picture).

I also saw some longer term employees almost cry when they had to
give up their tiny, low-digit badge to get their picture taken..8')

Procedures manual:
"
                               INTERNAL USE ONLY
8.01 Employee Photo Identification Badge Policy 26-AUG-85
SCOPE: WORLDWIDE
Digital's employee photo identification badge is driven by
business needs and an industry standard providing a
commonsense approach protecting employees and company
property. Digital requires employees to display their
employee photo identification badge at all times while on
Digital premises. In addition, badges will not be loaned to
others or reproduced in any form. Management will ensure that
terminating employees return their badges.
PRACTICE
Requirements
Each employee will be issued one standard photo identification
badge unless otherwise defined by local law, customs or safety
standards. The badge may not be defaced in any manner, e.g.
logos, pictures or drawings.
Only Personnel (designated by the regional security manager)
and security departments within the United States are
authorized to order badge stock or issue finished badges.
Digital Europe and GIA will establish their own procurement
and control procedures ensuring that they are consistent with
the provisions of Corporate Security Policy and Standards.
Responsibilities
Local Security Organizations
o Establish written employee procedures for the procurement,
fabrication, control, issuance, and use of employee photo
   identification badges.
o Take appropriate action to guarantee the return of employee
photo identification badges from former employees that have
failed to return their badges to their manager/supervisor.
o If no local Security organization exists, the above
functions will be performed by the local personnel
   department.
Local Personnel Department
o Be responsible for the issuance, protection and
accountability of Corporate employee photo identification
   badge numbers.
o Ensure that all employees return their employee photo
identification badge upon termination of employment.
Notify the site Security Coordinator or Security Department
   of the termination immediately.

Re .1:
I have heard that picture badges will not be issued to ZK employees
because people don't want them. This can be done because of the "local
customs" clause in the above policy. However, I wouldn't bet on that being
true forever.
Re .2:
It seems that surrendering truly old badges is a site-specific policy:

 SUBJECT: PICTURE BADGES
In the near future the old blue and white badges will no longer
allow you to gain access to Digital facilities. If you have not
received your picture badge please stop into security and have it
done. The blue and white badge must be turned in at that time,
but, if you have an old black and white badge, it may be kept as a
memento. Again neither the blue and white nor the black and white
will be considered identification in the near future. Thank you.

However, regardless of what Russell's memo says, SHR security had better
accept the validity of old-style badges if they expect most ZK employees
to be able to attend meetings on-site.

| 219.4 | Required in MRO beginning Dec 1 | HPSCAD::FORTMILLER | Ed Fortmiller | Thu Nov 20 1986 08:51 | 7 |
| | Picture badges will be required in MRO (Marlboro) beginning on
December 1, 1986. If you do not have a picture badge you will
have to sign in at one of the entrances where there is a security
    guard/receptionist.

Guess one should get some bright red lipstick and write IBM or
whatever on their forehead and go get their picture taken!

| | I had faithfully worn my old blue 4 digit DEC badge for almost
20 years. Even though I was willing to convert over to the new
picture badge, there was no way I was going to turn in my old one.
So for a month or so before the change-over, I planned my defense.
I had visions of Butch Cassidy holding off the entire LTN
security force as I carried by badge to the grave.
The big day arrived and I walked to the camera with a chip on my
shoulder. "Are you going to take my old badge?" I asked
defiantly. "No sir". No sir! That's it? I can take it home
and mount it in plastic? Frame it? "Yes sir".
What a letdown. I was almost tempted to turn it in after all.

| 219.6 | MRO picture badges? | CADSYS::RICHARDSON |  | Thu Nov 20 1986 13:26 | 8 |
| | Gee, Ed, I thought that Marlboro started REQUIRING the picture badges
when I got my picture badge when I still worked there, at least
a year and a half ago (managed to keep my old blue badge, too, with
the sailboat sticker and all). I don't mind the picture badges
(enve though I am hardly photogenic!) because I can see valid reasons
    for them.

| | For those who don't have the new badges, another rumor was that
these larger new badges were designed so they wouldn't fit in our
wallets. Hah! I needed a new wallet anyway. If I didn't have
it in my wallet I'd probably loose and certainly forget it. I had
also heard that in MRO at least they'd allow old-timers to keep
    their small low digit badges.

You can keep the older badges, for a keepsake only.
You still need the new pictured ones to get into the buildings.
