    I recently have attended a demo of the newly announced DECmpp 
    machine (MASSPAR), and was very much impressed by both its 
    processing power and development environment on the DECstation 
    front-end.
    
    Marketing messages tell DECmpp is well suited for Artificial 
    Intelligence applications , especially pattern matching, 
    content-based retrieval, & neural-networks. 
    
    Have there been any investigations on such applications from 
    groups inside DIGITAL? Does there exist any such AI tools running 
    on MASSPAR?

	There's currently a retrieval engine called Elixir which runs on the MASPAR. This does retrieval from large text data-bases and is similar to Excalibur, Topic, etc. For neural nets, things are at a more experimental stage. Ford Aerospace in San Jose, California has done the most work; I have two papers by them about implementations of various NN systems on the MASPAR. Please send mail if you'd like copies (and include address for airmail). Other applications for the MASPAR include Paragon Imaging's Visualization Workbench, which is a very nice package for image analysis. They claim a 1000x speedup over typical workstation performance. This package is useful in satellite imaging, part inspection, and other applications requiring sophisticated processing of images. Hope this is useful. Mark

	Folks, I have some recent news that Paragon (see .1) is being withdrawn from the MASPAR machines because of a lawsuit. Paragon is apparently being sued by the University of New Mexico over the ownership of Paragon's products and technology, much of which originated at the university. So until we hear otherwise, Paragon is not available on MASPAR. As far as I know, it's still available for sale to run on U*IX machines, including Digital's. More news as I get it. Regards, Mark
