| 279.2 | TIRS of IBM (IBM's Repository/SAA) | YIPPEE::FITZGIBBON | Joe Fitzgibbon VB/EIC | Wed Feb 13 1991 10:28 | 30 |
|  |
Vendor : IBM. (You know where to find them....)
Tool : TIRS (The Integrated Reasoning Shell).
	New family of KBS development tools. Integrated in IBM's Repository
	andAD/Cycle framework, described as "strategic base to which
	functionality will be added". Apparently one of the primary features
	of IBM's Repository/SAA strategey is to create a Knowledge Processing
	Environment (KPE) that would contain descriptions of rules and objects
	that any product running on top of KPE could use. The rules and objects
	would be defined as Repository types. The KPE would contain the
	inferencing and control code necessary for any application to
	wishing to use the Repository Rules and objects. It is believed that
	KPE will be a combinationof ESE, KnowledgeTool, TIRS and "some new
	stuff" - and is being referred to as TIRS II.
	Forward/Backward chaining rules, Rete pattern matching, opportunistic
	reasoning, Frames with inheritance and user defined relationships.
	Graphical development environment.
	Delivery system is compiled and can be "embedded".
	According to reports TIRS is a "expanded.... version of KnowledgeTool".
Cost : ???
Platforms : IBM Mainframes (OS2).

 Ref. .-1;
      When reading the indicated comparison, it should be noted that in the case
 of CLIPS and Level5 the information used appears to be out of date since it
 makes no mention of the CLIPS Object (e.g. criticises lack of inheritance) and
 Level5 Object versions of these products which were released in the course of
 1989/90.
