Subject: White paper on IMKA(Initiative for Managing Knowledge Assets)
Bill,
Have just returned from the US. I did some investigating into the joint
effort in AI that we are doing with US West. I have a few things for
you on it.
Attached is a white paper giving a general description of the scope of
the effort.
I have what looks like a press release on the effort. It is hard copy
and I am having it copied for you.
Chuck Marshall will be Digital's liason on the project. He has promised
to keep me abreast of the effort. You may want to ask to be included on
his mailing list.
I discussed the initiative with Themis Papageorge, AI Mkt Mgr, and he
informed me that he has received many high level phone calls from large
US organizations concerning the initiative including telecom related
ones. He tells me that because of this interest, the inititative will
go public on 1 July.
That's all that I have been able to gather so far. The press release
will be in the mail as soon as it is copied.
Cheers,
Pat

Knowledge Asset Management (KAM) Technology
===========================================
Executive Summary
-----------------
KAM is a next generation technology. This technology advances the
state of the art from data processing to knowledge processing.
It allows it's users to capture and codify knowledge as a corporate
asset, and manages that knowledge as a tangible corporate asset.
KAM is a new technology that will serve as a foundation in the
development of products and applications that enable corporations to
manage Knowledge Assets. This foundation will allow software developers,
application developers and MIS organizations to build the next
generation of products, applications and information systems
incorporating data and knowledge.
KAM will be robust and general enough to allow building products,
applications and information systems on many platforms and operating
systems and will free the developer from the task of designing new (and
incompatible with all existing other products and applications)
knowledge representations and inference mechanisms; instead the
builder will be freed to concentrate on the product/application/system
specific features. Furhermore, the builder will be able to maintain the
systems built on the new technology foundation much easier than before,
because of the "standard" representation and the C language used for
KAM.
From a technical point of view, KAM is a merger of the most powerful
Knowledge Representation (ROCK) and the most powerful forward chaining
Inferencie Engine (TIN) available. Implemented in C and C++
and delivered in C for compatibility with conventional software and for
portability, it will set a new standard for the knowledge processing
market.
ROCK is the implementation of a powerful schema representation
language(CRL) with persistent schema storage. An example of this
architecture in the past has been Knowledge Craft, a product with
established benchmarks for power and speed of execution in the case of
large knowledge bases. TIN is Digital's proprietary evolution of a high
performance forward chaining rules language. An example of this
implementation in the past has been VAX OPS5, again with well
established benchmarks for power and speed of execution in the case of
large rule bases.
Major benefits are:
Reasoning about knowledge
KAM is addressing high performance for extremely large knowledge
bases.
Integration and Embeddability with conventional systems
Portability and Distributability within heterogeneous environments
Finally, the reason all th members of IMKA chose to develop this new
technology is simple: each member of the IMKA alliance defined their
corporate needs in capturing and managing complex corporate-wide
knowledge. Each company evaluated presently available technology and
applications for knowledge acquisition and determined that the
existing technology would not meet the business demands of the next
decade.

The following article can be found on page 85 of the September 1990
issue of Sales Update Europe. Please be aware that this is strictly an
"initiative" and not the specification for a product offering. The
goals of the program are demanding and address critical needs in the
industry. There are still some significant challenges to be met before
Digital and/or others can define products based on the standards that
will emerge from IMKA. So, please follow the age-ole AI motto of
"Manage Expectations" when discussing IMKA with your clients.
Digital's party line today is that membership in the initiative is
"open". However, we are not actively soliciting new members. In other
words, if your client approaches you about membership, you can refer
them to Pat McHugh or myself. But please do not go out and try to talk
your clients into joining up at this time.

o Digital and four other technology leaders have joined together

o Two-year, multi-million dollar effort will create a new
knowledge asset management technology that will be
high-performance, easily integrated with conventional systems
and applications, and distributed and portable within

o Guidelines for levels of participation and the technology
description to be released at AAAI '90, the artificial
intelligence industry's trade show, in Boston on July 31, 1990
===================================================================
DESCRIPTION
Digital, Texas Instruments, Ford Motor, U.S. West and Carnegie Group have
formed the Initiative for Managing Knowledge Assets(IMKA) to develop the
next generation of software technology designed to capture corporate
knowledge and manage that knowledge as a critical corporate asset. On July
31, 1990, the five companies will announce specific new technology
directions. This will not be a new product from Digital or any of the IMKA
members, although the new technology may be incorporated in future products
from Digital and other alliance members.
The new technology under development is considered "next generation" because
it combines four key attributes within a single technology: power;
performance; the ability to integrate with other applications; and the
ability to function in a distributed, heterogeneous computing environ- ment.
No other technology combines these capabilities.
IMKA membership guidelines and more technical details of the new technology
will be announced during the American Association for Artificial
Intelligence (AAAI) trade show to be held at the Hynes Convention Center in
Boston from July 30 to August 2, 1990.
RESOURCES
Digital's participation in the IMKA effort is being managed from The
Artificial Intelligence Technology Center in Marlboro, MA. For further
information on the technology or relating to customer questions regarding
IMKA membership, contact Pat McHugh at DTN: 291-8051 or (508) 490-8051 from
outside.
