UK Service Plan - DECsystem 5100
************************************
1 Product Overview
The DECsystem 5100 (MIPSMATE) is a general purpose entry level
Ultrix/Risc desktop system. It is a replacement product for the
DECsystem 3100, and provides both an increase in performance and
additional internal storage and communication options to the
DECsystem 3100.
The DECsystem 5100 will compete in the Open Systems market place
which has two segments, those that are price/performance driven
which are primarily technical customers, and Open System policy
customers who are both commercial and technical
The DECsystem 5100 incorporates the R3000 Risc CPU chip from MIPS,
clocked at 20 MHz to provide a performance capability of 18 integer
MIPS.
The system is housed in a BA42 enclosure (6in. x 18 in. x 16 in.)
and can contain up to 5 internal SCSI devices and a system total of
7. This would provide 800 MBytes of internal disk storage (RZ23 and
RZ24) and a system total of 4.4 GBytes. Internal tape drives can
include either a TZK30 (95 Mbyte cartridge) or TZK10 (300 Mbyte
QIC). System memory can be expanded from 8 MBytes up to 128 MBytes.
2 Engineers Required
The primary maintenance strategy for the DECsystem 5100 is
identification and replacement of faulty Field Replaceable Units
utilising the in built diagnostics. Basic skills for maintenance of
this product are synonymous with those for the DECsystem 3100. The
recommended training courses are detailed in the training section.
It should be noted that the DECsystem 5100 is not a workstation.
In the case of built-in diagnostics not being able to identify the
failure, then the system would be diagnosed by the use of Ultrix and
its exercisers and/or option swapped as circumstances dictate.
Engineers maintaining DECsystem 5100 systems can seriously harm
Ultrix's file system, if the operating system is not shutdown
correctly. Use of certain system exercisers can also destroy the
customers data when in untrained hands. It is therefore essential
that all engineers maintaining these systems have a familiarity with
Ultrix. In line with Digital's major sales efforts this year in the
Open Systems arena, Customer Services should encourage these sales
by the use of suitably qualified engineers.
The ship figures for UK are shown below.
FY91 FY92
---- ----
Q1 32 220
Q2 63 179
Q3 104 114
Q4 142 68
Using these figures and experience gained with DECsystem 3100
systems, resource and training needs should be able to be evaluated.
The DECsystem 5100 began shipping in November.
3 Training
Training for the DECsystem 5100 is provided via Self Paced
Instruction (SPI). This is available in the Field Training Centres
(FTCs) now, and is course number EY-F424E. This course contains no
hands on training.
There is only one prerequisite for the course, Ultrix Level 1 for CS
Engineers (EY-D777E) a 5 day lecture/lab course.
If DECsystem 5100 maintenance is to be the engineers first course in
the area of worksystems and desktop systems, then it is suggested
that the DECstation 3100 course (EY-9895E-IV) is completed first.
This is an IVIS course that offers the student some lab experience
plus some Ultrix content.
The SPI course should provide the student with sufficient
information to install, troubleshoot, diagnose and repair the
majority of DECsystem 5100 failures.
The course also provides the student with a complete DECsystem 5100
maintenance documentation set.
There is no further training available on the DECsystem 5100.
Further training in troubleshooting DECsystem 5100 failures would be
provided by the standard Ultrix offerings.
Ultrix Troubleshooting for CS Engineers EY-9890E-LO
Ultrix Networking EY-B226E-LO
4 Tools and Resources
4.1 Diagnostics
The DECsystem 5100 only utilises in-built diagnostics which are all
executable from the console. A subset of these diagnostics execute
automatically at system power up.
The MDM suite of diagnostics do not execute on this system.
4.2 System Exercisers and Errorloging
Ultrix has a suite of system exerciser packages designed to test and
exercise the CPU, memory, disks, tapes, printers and network
devices. These can either be run individually or combined to offer a
similar function to UETP.
Any errors detected by the exercisers or the system are reported in
a system errorlog which can be interrogated by the customer or
service engineer.
4.3 Remote Diagnosis and Analysis
The DECsystem 5100 provides no in-built remote diagnostic
capabilities, nor will any remote connection be provide by Digital
for these systems (ie No MDS01).
Vaxsim is not available for Ultrix systems, nor is any equivalent
service provided for Ultrix customers at this time.
4.4 Special Tools and Test Equipment
No special tools or test equipment are required for this product.
4.5 Capital Equipment
A DECsystem 5100 has been on Field Test in the Customer Support
Center. It is hoped that this will remain after the field test has
ended for resolution of complex hardware/software problems.
4.6 Documentation
The following documentation is available, and is available in the
Support Starter Kit (SSK) which has been copied to all offices.
Documents marked * are also provided as part of the DECsystem 5100
training course.
DECsystem 5100 Maintenance Guide EY-422AA-MG-001 *
DECsystem 5100 Installation Guide EY-420AA-IN-001 *
DECsystem 5100 Operators Guide EY-421AA-OG-001 *
DECsystem 5100 Illustrated Parts Breakdown EK-5100X-IP-001

5 Call Flow
This product should follow the normal call flow for Office Products,
in particular it should follow that of the DECsystem 3100.
Normal problem escalation paths should also be followed, utilising
ECSO, CLD and PRISM as appropriate.
Where necessary the Product and Technology Group should be involved
in order to aid and assist the escalation process and liaise with
CSSE/Engineering groups as required. This will normally be
co-ordinated by the dedicated PFE Peter Beddall.
6 Logistics
Many of the FRUs contained within the DECsystem 5100 are non-unique,
and are shared with the DECsystem 3100.

Due to the relatively high volumes of this product, the short fix
times expected, and the lack of any level II training, I recommend
that this product be held in the Quality Swap Pool (QSP).
Holding this product in the QSP will have a number of advantages:-
The BSS for this option is around $120. It is clear that in a
protracted fault situation all maintenance revenues earned on the
faulty system will be lost. The purchase price of the proposed
system is around $22,500 less 50%.It is clear that one would have
to save in the order of 250 hours of engineers service time
(using a figure of $45/DLH) to reclaim the initial cost of this
item in the QSP. This may on the face of it not seem viable, but
one should consider a projected UK population of over 900
systems, then the QSP need only be used 10 times per year, saving
only 5 hours service per call, over a period of 5 years for the
costs to look more realistic.
History shows that a DECsystem 5100 will be eventually
incorporated into the QSP at some stage in its life, this should
therefore be considered a request to incorporate a DECsystem 5100
into the QSP before reaching a critical stage on a customer
site.
Customer Satisfaction is something that can not easily be
measured. From the satisfaction viewpoint an option swap is an
ideal solution for low/medium cost items.
Digital is having a major drive towards Ultrix. Protracted fix
times and rogue systems do do present a good advert for our
company. This coupled with the fact that Ultrix skills are still
in short supply, makes the DECSystem 5100 a valued addition to
the QSP.
Currently the QSP contains 3 DECstation 3100 systems for a
population of about 300 systems. I suggest therefore we hold 1
DECsystem 5100 in the pool, but its use be monitored with a view to
increasing the holding if demand increases.
This suggestion/recommendation has been review and it has been decided
that 1 DECSystem 5100 will be held in the QSP.
The suggested configuration is shown below:-
DU-51MT2-A9 DS5100 32MB RZ24 ULTRIX 4 USR
DECsystem 5100
MS44-DA 32 MB memory
Ethernet port
Four asynchronous lines
One SCSI controller
RZ24 209 MB SCSI disk
ULTRIX licence 1-4 users
ULTRIX WS Server licence
No load device included
US 120V Power Cord
RZ24-EG RZ24 209 MB SCSI Disk
TZ30-EG TZ30 Tape
The cost of this configuration is about $22,500, less 50%.
7 Product Servicability
The goals for the DECsystem 5100 are as follows:-
MTTR 1.5 HOURS
MTTI 2.0 HOURS (without software)
NMU 35%
MTBC 8.8 MONTHS
DOA ( 2%
MTBPR 15.8 MONTHS
MTBF 11.8 MONTHS
Support Ratio 2%
Duty Cycle 75%
MTTR - Mean Time To Repair
MTTI - Mean Time To Install
NMU - No Material Used Call Rate
MTBC - Mean Time Between Calls
DOA - Dead On Arrival
MTBPR - Mean Time Between Parts Replacement
MTBF - Mean Time Between Failures
This product has no PM requirements
8 Installation
The DECsystem 5100 hardware and software is designed to be customer
installed.
Acceptance of the system hardware is accomplished by applying power
to the system which will automatically run the power-up diagnostics
to verify that the system hardware is operational.
DECsystem 5100 operating system software will arrive preloaded on
the system when there is sufficient space (min 300MB) on the hard
disks. Software acceptance occurs when the Ultrix kernel is
operational. Application software is optional and must be loaded
separately.

PRODUCT NAME: Virtual X Windowing Terminal Ref: UKapn/tp/22-Nov
FCS: May-1991
DESCRIPTION: The VXT (Virtual X Windowing Terminal) program is the
second generation of "X" terminals. The family will
include six base models using both monochrome and color
monitors (15" & 19") with varying planes of memory.
All models will include a monitor, system box, LK401
keyboard and mouse.
IMPACT: High (see assessment)
ASSESSMENT: The impact of this product was decided as High, due to the
forecasted volumes that are estimated as being sold in the
next three years. Impact on Servicability is low as the
VXT is Digital's next generation of terminal in the
DECwindows enviroment. The VXT is placed in the DECwindows
market place and for that reason the profile of a PC
engineer is best suited for attending service calls.
