Do you think Digital puts you first?
This is a call to action!
Jac Simensen, in his recent quarterly talk, stressed that:
          1. a diminishing employment pool exists in the UK,
          2. demographic changes are challenging Digital's future employ-
             ment requirements, and
          3. to meet these needs we must review our current working prac-
             tices.
Following Jac Simensen's talk, a small group of Digital employ-
ees met to share ideas and to consider how Digital can respond
to the challenge of employing people in the 1990s. The group
subsequently decided to conduct an open forum at which we could
raise issues of concern to all employees and form working groups
          to address these issues.
We have identified the following issues thus far: Flexible and
part-time work, Employment policies and procedures, Dependent
care, Training and retraining opportunities, Women in manage-
ment, Valuing differences, and Communication between groups.
Are there other employee issues that you would like to see ad-
dressed? Please send your ideas in mail to RDGENG::PEOPLE_FIRST
by 30-May, and come along to the forum.
                               PEOPLE FIRST OPEN FORUM
The forum will be introduced by Jac Simensen.
             Date: 6-June, 12:30 to 2:00,
Venue: Dec Park II, Lecture Theatre.
             Drinks will be provided.
This invitation to attend the forum is being sent to a wide
distribution of employees in the Reading area, Basingstoke, and
Newbury, and includes management of all levels. An agenda will
be mailed a few days before the forum.
We have considered the following ways of tackling some of the
          above issues:
o Conduct research to document current problems and propose
             solutions
o Obtain real data on administrative overheads from existing
sources, the UK subsidiary, Personnel, networked contacts
             etc.
o Collect case studies of flexible work patterns from old
research projects and individual experiences in the UK and US
o Provide data to help management reach informed decisions
o Help empower people to create individual tailored solutions
o Set up cross-functional support groups, e.g. for working
             parents
o Set up a database of information for managers and employees
covering ongoing Digital projects, e.g. creche, Stone Center,
             People In the 90s
We look forward to exploring these solutions with your help.
Hoping to see you on 6-June,
          Clare Baggott
          Barbara Corman
          Heather Mascie-Taylor
          Tracey Pegram
          Elaine Russell-Wilks
          Jeanita Snowdon
          Gill Trotman
          Debbie Waltham

| | Perhaps we ought to have an employee survey :-)

Seriously though, surely personnel SHOULD have the desired data
that these girls require. After all when someone leaves they normaly
    give an explanation why...money,perks..etc

Why does digital go OTT when it comes to a *unforeseen* problem!

Maybe someone could explain exactly what Personnel do !!!

Are they really there to help employees or are they just
    an extension of management.

After all, if people are not happy with "their" company, then
the try to sort things out with their manager. If this and any
escalation fails, they may leave. But is any attention paid to
    their grievances ???

Could this "People-First" movement lead to Trade-Unions in DEC ??
