|  |     The question is not what has to be replaced but what is not going to
    work with 3.2c.
    
    I suspect that what will happen will be that when the system type field
    is read UNIX will spit out a message that says "Unknown Hardware type"
    or something along these lines.
    
    The other thing that might happen is that everything runs fine. I don't
    personally know but your statement about unsupported will be true. We
    (both the HW and SW groups) do a large amount of testing in repsect to
    OS versions and minimum hardware types/revisions.
    
    Adrianna Swartout is out this week at a conference. I am sure she will
    be able to tell you if it will "work". Remembering that "work" does not
    equal "Supported"

|  |     SInce your message was not clear; I would assume you are replacing the
    5/333 CPU with a 4/266.   If so, you're golden.   AS1000A 4/266
    supports V3.2d.

    our colleague in Romania says he wants to replace the 5/333 CPU-board 
    with an EV4 P/N:54-23297-04 (whatever this may be). So, is this 4/266? 
    And, what else has he to do except replacing the CPU and downgrade the
    firmware? Is it necessary to change the system main board, too?
    And then, will it support V3.2c or only V3.d?

	I'm not familiar with the part numbers, but the EV4 flavor requires 
the ECC SIMMs (5 SIMMs per bank) The system main board might not have these
sockets to install the SIMMs.

|  |     It takes a lot of effort to find out which CPU is supported on what
    motherboard and the relation to it concerning the minimal FW revision
    and version of the OS.
    Anyway this is what I figured out:
    
    -If the customer has an AS1000A 5/333, he has a Primo system
     The motherboard will have the partnr. 54-23499-01 or -02 and the CPU
     54-24799-02.
    
    -Version 3.2C of Digital Unix supports AS1000 4/266 (mikasa)
     Version 3.2D-2 of Digital Unix supports AS1000A 4/233 & AS1000A 4/266
                                                        (noritake)
    
    If the customer has:
    
    		- a 54-23499-01 motherboard (noritake), you must use
                  DUNIX v3.2D-2. The 4/266 CPU (54-23297-04) can be used.
    
    
    		- a 54-23499-02 motherboard (noritake without VGA), the cpu
                  can not be used (as far as I know). I'll try to figure
    		  out, but it doesn't mean that if it work that it is
    		  supported.
    
    If you want to use v3.2C of DUNIX, then you need to have:
    		- the 54-23308-01 mikasa motherboard
    		- the 54-23297-04 4/266 CPU module 
    
    Further be aware that if you use the new CPU, which is an EV4, on a
    noritake motherboard that had an EV5 on, you can't start the system.
    The firmware is different for EV4/EV5.
    You need to use a failsafe loader floppy with the correct firmware
    (in your case EV4) to do a FW update first. You need to reseat the
    SROM jumper on the CPU module from the default position to the position
    to start the FSL. You can find the jumper locations in the owner's
    guide.
    If I remember well, the SROM jumper-row is J1 on the 4/266 CPU. 
    For FSL update it must be placed on position 7.
    The default position depends on what motherboard you have.
    	- position 1 for the mikasa motherboard
    	- position 2 for the noritake motherboard.
    
    This ends my story. I hope it will help you to solve the problem.
