| I got around to doing a PDU dump on the mcc system, it looks like we
get the right data back from the agent at the SNMP PDU level, ie if you
look closely at the returns you actualy see real service table name
entries NetDDE, Nbt net bios, lmhosts etc... but the display line from
fcl and impm seems to display it wrong. See attached log
also, could this be a 7 bit 8 bit coding decoding problem of the
latinString /

Above, the OID returned by the agent is
1.3.6.1.4.1.77.1.2.3.1.1.3.128.128.22
where "1.3.6.1.4.1.77.1.2.3.1.1.3" is the nominal part of the OID
and "128.128.22" is the instance portion. Correctly, the instance
should be "4e.62.74" which corresponds to ascii "Nbt".
Because of this anomaly in the agent data, you will see the table
instances being displayed in that funny manner. However, if you
do a SHOW on all attributes, you should see all the attribute values
displayed correctly.

Using the MIB query tool, it says the values returned are ok, see
attached.
It appears that we take the hex coming back and convert it to decimal,
then use that in some way to create the display part.... if what we do
with the data from the agent ends up in "garbage" on the screen then
aren't we doing something wrong.
In any case, the result of all this is that its not practical to manage
the NT systems from MCC -- please contradict me, I'd love to be wrong
on this one as we have to demo this working to a customer on the 24th

| Ok, I take back some of what I said in the -.. replies. However,
attached is the response from a OS2 1.3 Lanamanegr 2.1 system, I don't
see anything different in the dump (ie all the right hex codes)
but the display seems fine. I will cross post this in the windows NT

Amrit,
As I stated earlier, there is a bug in the NT agent. That is
why things work fine with the OS2 SNMP agent but do not work with
the NT SNMP agent.
There are basically two parts to the data returned by the agent :
i) OID coresponding to the mib object
and ii) The value of the mib object.
If the mib object is an identifier attribute, we derive the value
of the object from the instance portion of the OID. In the case of
the NT agent the value of the mib object is returned correctly, but
the OID is returned incorrectly. Since we do not use the actual value,
but synthesize it from the instance portion of the OID, you will see
garbage in both the out_entity and in the svSvcName attribute value.
We do this to ensure that the instance value displayed in out_entity
is the same as the identifier attribute value.
I have created an executable for the SNMP AM which does not work
as above, but displays the value returned by the agent for identifier
attributes, instead of synthesizing it from the OID. If you need it
for your demo, send me mail and I will provide you with a pointer.
