5028.0. "HP / SNMP RMON problem" by MSAM03::YEOKJOO () Mon May 10 1993 10:00
My customer has problem with SNMP RMON on DECMCC.

They have a HP LANProbe II/SNMP running SNMP RMON. According to HP, their
Lanprobe II implemented all the 9 features of SNMP RMON MIB (segment
statistics, History, Host Table, Host top N, Traffic Matrix, Filters,
Packet Capture, Alarms, Events, Log, Trap). What they have done first is to
compile & load the RMON_STD_MIBDEF.TXT as supplied on the DECMCC. They found
that they cannot get back any information from the Probe. Next, HP sent
them a copy of the MIBDEF file for the Probe. They compiled and loaded (no
error encountered) and again,Couldn't get back any information from the
probe. However, when monitored SNMP statistics on the Probe, the
the value from "Rcvd unknown oper err pkts" is equivalent to the
number of queries made on the LanProbe; or the percent value for "Rcvd
unknown oper err pkt percent" is always 100%.
What could be the problem ? How shall I proceed from here ?
  Thanks in advance
  Joo

Seems like the HP LANProbe hasn't been configured properly. If you
can get MIB II attributes but not the RMON groups, then you can be
pretty much sure that is the problem.
BTW, both the standard and experimental RMON mibs are pre-loaded in the
DECmcc dictionary. If you reload RMON into the dictionary you have
the possibility of removing the PA RMON statistical attributes that
are also pre-loaded in the dictionary. (It all depends on whether you
chose the AUGMENT or REPLACE option when you ran MCC_TCPIP_MTU.COM).

| 5028.2 | Still the same after REPLACED | MSAM03::YEOKJOO |  | Thu May 13 1993 10:33 | 38 |
| | Hi,

I received the following mail from my customer. Seems like he reloaded
the RMON MIB and still having the same problem.
  Any advice ?

  Thanks,
  Joo
************************************************************
I used the Replace Option when I reload RMON MIB.

I have also reloaded the PA FM as follows:

  MCC> test mcc 0 pa

  MCC 0 PA
  AT 12-MAY-1993 07:49:14

  Test Successful
  MCC> enroll mcc_pa_fm
%MCC-I-ENRDUPLENTRY, enrollment successful; duplicate entries found and
  replaced
  MCC> test mcc 0 pa

  MCC 0 PA
  AT 12-MAY-1993 08:00:59

  Test Successful
  MCC>

However, the HP LANProbe RMON still doesn't move. Can you kindly advise me
what have I done wrong and how to correct it.

| 5028.4 | HP LanProbe Configuration | MSAM03::YEOKJOO |  | Mon May 17 1993 07:11 | 23 |
| | Hi,

Anybody who can help the customer of mine, to configure the HP LanProbe ?
He still won't let me get off the hook even though I asked him to check
with HP.He also asking if we need to set anything in order to pass the
authentication features of Lanprobe. Following are the portions of the
  mail received from him.
  ************************
In the HP LANProbe II documentation, I found the following under the "SNMP
  RMON MIB Firmware".

The HP LanProbe II/SNMP implements all nine groups of RFC1271.

The HP4995A probe also contains an enterprise specific MIB which allows
for configuration and administration of the probe. It provides enhanced
authentication features as well as specification of the destination of
  traps.

  Thanks in advance,
  Joo

Weren't there any documents about setup and configuration of the
LANProbe ? Normally, you would need to set up the community
before your management station can query the agent.
        rb.
