3426.0. "SMP or Secure SNMP Support?" by FOUR62::LICAUSE (Al Licause (338-5661)) Fri Jul 24 1992 12:21
Anyone care to comment on plans for either SMP or Secure SNMP for DECmcc or
is this best left to a discussion the the UCX (CONNECTIONS) notes file?
Notes from the UnderLAN seem to indicate that someone in Digital is working
very actively on this:
"SMP could surpass both the present SNMP and OSI's CMIP. Firms
planning network management systems around CMIP may find it
threatening. A late 1991 IDC survey of 200 network managers
indicated 57.5% considered OSI network management standard
support critical. Motorola's Network Management Strategies
Manager Jim Moorhouse said SMP could divide the industry. It is
already dividing the vendor community. Some firms, including
Digital, plan to implement it as soon as they finish testing it.
Others, including Cabletron, will wait until it has completed
IETF's formal draft proposal process. SMP will start shipping to
clients as a free upgrade this week, without waiting for formal
approval, which could take nine months or longer."
