I have searched this notes file for information on polling overhead but
have not found the information I am looking for. So here goes...
My customer is currently looking at various network management vendors
- DEC, HP, SUN, etc. The customer is very concerned that the
management system they choose does not consume a large proportion of
their valuable bandwidth.
Can anyone provide any information on the following.
What messages (overhead) are sent/received when doing an SNMP poll for
interface status?
What messages are sent/received when doing a DECnet poll for executor
status?
Does anyone have a feeling for how our polling overhead measures up
against that of our main competitors (HP, SUN)?
Any help appreciated,
John

I don't have any exact figures.... I setup a LAN analyzer-type gizmo to watch SNMP stuff between DECmcc and Cisco & Vitalink boxes and was delighted at the small quantity of packets I saw. Once I get MCC back on the air (having some problems after moving platforms) I can post some exact packet sizes and quantities. Lee Roth

One other suggestion... can the SNMP devices do SNMP traps? If so, you could poll less often for interface status and rely on the box to send out a message if an interface went down. Lee

Lee,
Thanks for you answers.
Some of the SNMP devices will support SNMP TRAPs and these will be used
to save on network bandwidth. However some polling will need to be
done and I will need to size this. Any 'hard-and-fast' figures on
overhead would be great.
Is the overhead any different when you are polling for ustilisation
statistics?
Do you notice any difference when polling DECnet systems?
Thanks again Lee.
