Hello again,
I have a question from a customer interested in DECmcc - he's
also looking at a number of competitors' network management
products (he didn't say whose ...).
He wants to know whther DECmcc could be used to manage an UPS
(Uninterruptable Power Supply). He hasn't yet decided on whose
UPS to buy - it may depend on whether the UPS can be managed
from "some vendor's" network management station.
So far I haven't looked into the "Management Module Programming"
side of DECmcc so I'm requesting some guidance. I have skimmed
the manual, and I noticed the phrase "Anything can be managed"
- so I guess we can do it (can we ??), but how long would it
take to implement ?? The customer told me that one of the
"competitors" quoted one "man-month" to develop an interface
and an icon for managing an UPS. Can anyone give an estimate of
how much effort would be required under DECmcc ??? Obviously I
understand that the amount of effort required will be related
to how much much functionality is required - but I'm looking
for a "ball-park" figure on development times.
From my discussion with the customer, he seems to be looking
for something which will allow pro-active management of the UPS
- e.g. something that will raise an alarm condition if the UPS
batteries were below normal charge so that somebody would be
alerted to go & change the batteries.
Richard.

Richard,
Try Graham Blower (7 851 2698) at the OSEC (Manchester UK). They are
geared to this sort of issue, manipulating their UDMT product. They
have prooved very helpful in catering some needs I have for another
customer project.
Good luck.....
